Carbonation reactions of concrete with carbon dioxide and, mainly, the chloride salts action are the main causes responsible for concrete degradation. Protective coatings help to improve the durability of concrete structures by acting as a physical barrier against the corrosion agents. Waterborne paints are usually used for concrete protection rather than solvent-based paints since they are less pollutant. The aim of this work is to investigate the influence of the pore size and porosity on the permeability of the paints films toward sodium chloride. Three characterization methods from membrane science were implemented to characterize paint coatings. The time-lag method was used to determine the permeability toward the sodium chloride and toward helium and argon, these for approximately 100% relative humidity. From the seven waterborne paints formulated, only one was found to be suitable for surface protection of reinforced concrete, since its permeability toward NaCl was smaller than 10−14 m2 s−1, the threshold value required by National Laboratory of Civil Engineering (LNEC) in Portugal. For the formulated paints, it was observed that the average pore size correlates well with the permeability toward sodium chloride. This is an important result since obtaining the permeability toward sodium chloride of corrosion protective paints is very time consuming, while the average pore size can be obtained in a much shorter time. The use of a design of experiments methodology and the selection of the right constains aiming to optimise paint properties could be helpful. This methodology can be used in the context of product's develepment final optimisation or for tune existing ones. Results could be cost reduction of a product, within keeping or improving the original characteristics and properties.
Traîtements de surfaceIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : An acrylic fatty acid derivative (AcFAD) was evaluated as comonomer for promotion of oxidative cure in waterborne latexes. AcFAD was polymerized by solvent homopolymerization and copolymerization and by emulsion copolymerization, and the final products characterized. In the two polymerization processes, NMR analyses confirmed that the reaction occurred involving both the terminal acrylic double bond and the conjugated double bonds of the aliphatic chain. Compared with a reference acrylic latex, the results obtained after AcFAD incorporation showed a time-dependent increase in gel content and in solvent resistance of dry films. These were ascribed to oxidative cure and consequent self-crosslinking of the acrylic polymer, involving the conjugated double bonds in AcFAD side chains. Oxidative cure was also confirmed by FTIR analyses. In addition, reduction in minimum film-forming temperature evidenced that AcFAD has an internal plasticization effect during film formation. Incorporation of this comonomer in acrylic paint binder formulations constitutes a promising alternative to the use of volatile coalescing agents. Note de contenu : - EXPERIMENTAL : 1. Materials

SEM imaging indicated good dispersion of silica within the polymer matrix. This hybrid coating showed significantly lower dirt pick-up than the equivalent paint formulation without nanosilica additive, towards both organic and inorganic ashes. Washing with running water further decreases dirt retention. This self-cleaning performance remained unchanged after several dirt/washing cycles, during a 1-month period. Surface hardness measurements indicated no significant differences between the original and composite paint films. The lower dirt pick-up was attributed to nanoroughness created by the nanosilica particles present in the film. Revêtements:PeintureIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : An apparatus for determining the permeability of paint films towards chloride ion is described. This set-up implements the time-lag method and consists of a permeation cell made up of two chambers divided by a supported paint film. The upper chamber contains an aqueous sodium chloride solution and the lower one, water. The permeability is obtained from the conductivity history read at the lower chamber. Osmotic pressure issue is addressed and the reproducibility of the results reported. The time-lag method is not described in any standard. The requirement concerning "surface protection systems for concrete" for chloride ion permeability is not quantified in prEN 1504-2. The standard establishes that this requirement is "subject to national standards and national regulations" but when the capillary adsorption of water is lower than 0.01 kg/(m2h0.5) the diffusion of chloride ion is not to be expected. Some experimental results prove this is not correct and, in Portugal, the National Laboratory of Civil Engineering (LNEC) has proposed a threshold permeability value of 10-14 m2/sec for coatings claiming to be corrosion protective.
