Résumé : |
The substitution of solvent-based trim paints by more environmentally friendly waterborne products progresses rather slowly. One of the reasons for this is the limited window of workability of waterborne coating formulations compared to their solventborne equivalents. The limited application window of waterborne coating systems originates from the disperse nature of the resins used and the quick rise in viscosity when the critical particle stacking is reached. Consequently, the time in which irregularities in a freshly applied coating layer can be repaired without resulting in brush marks, commonly referred to as the open time, is rather short. Also, it is not uncommon with waterborne coatings to apply two or three layers to improve the coverage and hiding. The practical open time of aqueous coatings is, however, much shorter for the second layer than for the first and needs to be improved. This paper describes the work done to improve the open time of an aqueous white topcoat formulation in both the first and the second coating layer. |
