How electro-photographic printing works, the improvements being explored and the challenges facing pigment manufacturers are the subjects of this article by the author.
The term Non-Impact-Printing (NIP) is used for the manufacture of printing products which use no real printing forms (printing plate, printing block, etc.). Usually, in this case, a digitally-generated print image is transferred to a printing material with the aid of an NIP process. Xerography describes the process by which an image is built up electrostatically and subsequently developed through covering with electrostatically charged powder. This is the principle, also known as electrophotographic printing, on which many modern copiers, laser printers or faxes work. Today, these items of equipment are to be found in every office and have thoroughly revolutionised day-to-day office like in the last 15 years. Increasingly, the process is also being employed for textile printing, small print runs of industrial printing or digital print images[1,2,3]. Table 1 gives an estimate of global toner volumes and machine placements[4] for the electrophotographic printing process. The market growth is driven by technology. Most key players like Hewlett-Packard, Canon, Lexmark, and Xerox are active with both toner and ink jet technologies.Note de contenu : - How do printers and copiers work ?

The current development of waterborne dispersions together with cost/performance characteristics are driven by responsible care for the environment and the community. Biocides, APEO's (Alkyl phenol ethoxylates) and VOC's (Volatile Organic Compounds) are environmental and community issues that are currently in focus. The implementation of the Biocidal Product Directive (BPD 98/8/EC) is imminent. APEO's have been eliminated in many applications, in emulsion polymerisation the exchange is not complete but producers are voluntarily eliminating their use. Recent changes in the regulations concerning the emission of the VOC's have led to a growing interest and need for more environmentally friendly coatings.
New dispersion developments including novel morphology and self crosslinking chemistry have addressed the above needs and contributed to satisfying the market requirements for new products.Note de contenu : - Preservatives

Revêtements en phase aqueuse:Peinture en phase aqueuseIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : In the first part of an article on waterborne coatings for the wood industry the authors report on why a chain approach is needed from joinery industry to the building site.
Stricter legislation on the use of solvent borne coatings forces the Dutch joinery industry to consider alternative primer systems. A logical choice is to switch to waterborne primers. However, if these coatings are used in the typical DUtch way of building, then problems may arise.
The method of construction of houses in The Netherlands starts by putting up window frames and subsequently building brick walls around them. Therefore, during the construction phase, the primed wood is exposed to moisture (rain), cement and damages. Attention must, therefore, be paid to the performance of a waterborne coating in the first months after application.
It is known that waterborne coatings improve their performance after a longer drying time, but this may be critical if the film formation process has not been fully completed.Note de contenu : - Evaluation studies
