Stabilité thermiqueIndex. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : Exploration of biocolorant in leather industry is explored widely owing to its environmental limitation. Besides, employing synthetic dyes in leather process requires high end of pipe treatment due to their complex chemical structure. Therefore, an attempt has been made on exploiting madder root dye (Rubia cordifolia L.) for leather dyeing application. The effect of varying pretreatment regimen on madder colorant extraction, chemical characterizations (including UV-Vis, IR, particle size, zeta potential value, and thermal studies) and optimum operating leather dyeing conditions are studied. The results revealed dissolving medium pH 5, 100oC, and 60 min duration of extraction is optimum. Thus, obtained dye characteristics showed maximum absorption peak at 460 nm, with an average particle size of 166 nm. It also shows a negative zeta potential value of -5.31 which is indicative for dyeing application. The optimum leather dyeing is found at leather pH 5.5, 10% dye concentration and 4 h duration. At optimum dyeing parameters it shows good fastness, perspiration, organoleptic properties without affecting the physical characteristic. Novelty of the present research would lead to develop eco-dyeing method in leather manufacture. Moreover, the study unravels a new application of eco-benign dye to achieve sustainable process. HennéIndex. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : In the present work, antimicrobial activity of the aqueous extract from leaves of Lawsonia inermis (henna) has been evaluated. Two gram positive and five gram negative bacterial strains isolated from raw goat skins and three fungal species isolated from finished leathers have been utilized for the antimicrobial studies using aqueous extract from henna leaves. Gram-positive bacteria have found to be completely inhibited by henna at concentrations of 650 ppm and gram negative bacteria have been inhibited by henna concentration between 780 to 910 ppm. Growths of all fungal strains isolated have been inhibited by henna extract at a concentration of 1300 ppm. This study clearly demonstrates that henna offers good antimicrobial activity against the bacterial and fungal species. It endows strength and softness to leather by lubricating its fibers. A certain amount of fungicide is also offered during the post tanning operation, to protect the leather from future fungus infection. The aim of this work is to develop a novel fatliquor, which has both lubricating and antifungal activity. Sulfated blended fatliquors were developed by blending 80:20 proportions of castor and rice bran oil respectively and then followed by reaction with Sulphuric acid at 28±2°C. The novel fatliquor was then characterized for particle size which was similar to a control (sulfated castor and sulfated rice bran ouf) fatliquor. Antifungal performance of the novel fatliquor was confirmed by agar well-diffusion process against selected fungus species such as Aspergillus piger, Aspergillus flavus and Aspergillus fumigatus. The resultant leathers were evaluated for physical strength, such as tear strength, tensile strength and lastometer test and the results were found to be similar to control leather. Our study provides additional insights for using such novel fatliquors for both antifungal and lubrication properties. Tannage Résumé : Salt tolerant halophyte Sesuvium portulacastrum (S. portulacastrum) is capable of absorbing sodium chloride. In the present study, the feasibility of using S. portulacastrum as a bioaccumulant for NaCl present in tannery wastewater has been studied. The plants were grown in soil fed with tannery wastewater with varying concentrations of NaCl. The growth parameters of the plants such as root and shoot length was studied. The amount of Na+ and Cl- accumulated by the plant in leaves and shoots were estimated. The accumulation of Na+ and Cl- increased with increase in plant density and salt concentration of tannery wastewater. However, it has been found that increase in salt concentration resulted in reduced growth of the plant. It has been observed that 34% of Na+ and 22% of Cl- were absorbed by the plant at a NaCl concentration of 15000 ppm at high plant density conditions. Maximum accumulation of Na+ and Cl- has been observed in leaves compared to stems and shoots. Salt used for preservation is discharged along with the soak liquor and contributes to 70% of TDS load from leather manufacturing. As an attempt to reduce chloride and TDS, plant based preservation with Tamarindus indica was studied. Different concentrations of salt and Tamarind leaf extract were applied on freshly-flayed goatskins based on its green weight and compared with control (40% salt alone/kg of skin wt.). Sensory evaluation of the preserved skin was done every day (till 21st day) for smell, hair slip and putrefaction. The samples were collected on 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 71h, 14th and 21st day and tests such as moisture content, total nitrogen content, protein content, hydroxyproline content and microbial load for finding out the curing efficiency. Skin those were preserved for 21 days were processed into leather and the leather and properties were examined. The result showed that 15% salt with 15% Tamarindus indica and 10% salt with 15% Tamarindus indica (Test) showed good preservation systems. Note de contenu : - Skin - Plant extract
