Waterproofing is important in protecting the structure and ensuring that the structure is usable over its service life. The forces exerted by water are enormous and its effects are unpredictable. Water proofing may be defined as the prevention of water penetration into or th rough dry concrete. It may be required where there is a hydrostatic head of water to be resisted, or where unusually dry conditions must be maintained.
On the other hand, damp proofing may be defined as the treatment of concrete or mortar to retard the passage or absorption of water or water vapour, either by application of a suitable coating to exposed surfaces, or by use of a suitable admixture or treated cernent. As the definition indicates, damp proofing will not prevent the passage or absorption of water. It only reduces the rate of penetration of water into dry concrete, or rate of transmission of water through concrete. |
