Peter Pappas, Auteur Année de publication : 1999 Article en page(s) : p. 67-73 Note générale : Bibliogr. Langues : Américain (ame) Index. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Powder coating is undergoing rapid growth. Worldwide production of powder coatings in 1996 was estimated to be about 450,000 metric tons. Powder coatings are used most extensively in Europe and Japan; North american production in 1996 was estimated to be 110,000 metrictons. The general principle is to formulate a coating from solid components, melt mix them, disperse pigments (and other insoluble components) in a matrix of the major binder components, and pulverize the formulation. The powder is applied to the substrate, usually metal, and fused to be a continuous film by baking. Thermosetting and thermoplastic powders are available; the major portion of the market (>90%) is for thermosetting types. Note de contenu : - Electrostatic spray application

Revêtements -- DéfautsIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : A micro-mechanic blister growth model is proposed for a coating system consisting of a polymer film applied to a steel substrate exposed to salt solutions. The mechanism of the blister formation is based on corrosion-induced disbondment of the coating at the defect periphery coupled with the stress driven diffusive transport of liquid along the coating/ substrate interface. By considering the coating as a semi-double cantilever beam loaded by a moment at the periphery and a distributed load along the beam length due to mass transport, a fifth order ordinary differential equation is derived for the beam deflection. The solution is obtained, which yields the functional relationship between the blister growth rate and applied bending moment. The predicted blister growth velocity compared favorably with experimental observations on a paint coated steel panel immersed in a five percent salt water solution. Model predictions allow the construction of a blistering zone/non-blistering zone map, which should help to design better protective coatings for steel. Traîtements de surfaceIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : We report the successful formulation of stable and compatible in-situ phosphatizing coatings (ISPCs) for a waterborne alkyd-amino baking enamel applied on bare cold-rolled steel (CRS), iron phosphated Bonderite 1000 (BD), and iron phosphated plus Parcolene 60 chromated (BD+P60) coupons. The enhanced coating adhesion of water-based ISPCs is confirmed by the cathodic delamination measurements. After 100 hr of salt spray (fog) test, the corrosion resistance performance (measured by the corrosion disbondment across the X scribe, d in mm) of the water-based ISPC on CRS panel (d = 4.0-7.0 mm) outperformed that of the control alkyd paint on B-1000 (d = 26 mm) and also on BD+P60 (d = 14 mm) coupons. The superior coating performance of water-based ISPCs is believed to result from the in-situ metal surface phosphatization as detected by the reflectance FTIR technique.

ThuyaIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Alkyd-, oil-modified-latex-, and latex-based finishes were applied to severely weathered western redcedar and redwood boards that did not have any surface treatment to ameliorate the weathered surface prior to painting. Six finishes were evaluated annually for 11 years for cracking, flaking, erosion, mildew growth, discoloration, and general appearance. Lowsolids-content latex finishes that contained about 10% raw linseed oil and 11% acrylic resin (i.e., the oil-modified latex finishes) performed better on badly weathered wood than did the alkyd and the other latex finish, even after 11 years. Latex finishes that contained raw linseed oil probably stabilized the weathered surface and plasticized the finish. The stabilization of the wood surface and the flexibility of the finish throughout its service life are the important factors in finish performance on these weathered substrates. VernisIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) and chestnut (Castanea sativa Mill.) panels were coated with a polyurethane or an alkyd-based synthetic varnish. Some of the panels were impregnated with chromium-copper-boron (CCB) or the varnishes themselves before coating, as preservative-coating or water repellent (WR)-coating combination treatments, respectively. Earlier drastic changes in the intensity of the bands assigned to lignin and their shifts to some other stretching points were mostly attributed to chemical modification of lignin with the chromium in CCB, as well as the previously reported high color stability of CCB-impregnated wood. IR spectra of the nine months of weathering indicated that the synthetic varnish coating of non-impregnated or CCB-impregnated wood limited the reactions in lignin compared with polyurethane coating. Wood density and structural difference also seemed to play an important role since changes in lignin were mostly observed after six months of exposure for chestnut wood. Therefore, chemical reactions of CCB-wood cell wall components on the surface appeared likely to be affected from varnish type (their relative absorbency and distribution of sunlight), wood species (density and extractive substances), and exposure time and conditions.
