Worldwide production of powder coatings in 1996 was estimated to be about 450000 metric tons. Powder coatings are used most extensively in Europe and Japan ; North American production in 1996 was estimated to be 110000 metric tons. The general principle is to formulate a coating from solid components, melt mix them, disperse pigments (and other insoluble components) in a matrix of the major binder components, and pulverize the formulation. The powder is applied to the substrate, usually metal, and fused to a continuous film by baking. Thermosetting and thermoplastic powders are available ; the major portion of the market (>90%) if for thermosetting types. Revêtements en phase aqueuse:Peinture en phase aqueuseIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Designing optimal formulations for automotive waterborne basecoats can be fairly complex, often requiring knowledge of events that occur at the molecular level. The ultimate performatce of the coating can depend upon the success with which this knowledge is applied. We examine a system in which an aqueous dispersion of an acrylic latex with -OH functionality reacts with a melamine derivative when heated. We use fluorescence-labeling and energy transfer measurements to obtain information on the relative rates of crosslinking and interparticle polymer diffusion in these films. We show that temperature and particle morphology play an important role in the development of film properties. Finally, these energy transfer experiments provide information on the location of the melamine-formaldehyde resin in the dry film before the onset of crosslinking. This system can serve as a model for waterborne basecoat development in many automotive applications.

VernisIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : The formulation of in-situ phosphatizing coatings (ISPCs) was successfully performed for lacquer systems using a commercial nitrocellulose lacquer and an optimum amount of in-situ phosphatizing reagents (ISPRs). The in-situ phosphatizing lacquer (ISPL) system is stable, and shows no change in surface appearance and drying speed as compared to the unmodified lacquer (UML). The ISPLs are applied on pine, poplar, and red oak wood boards, and on cold-rolled steel, aluminum, and laminated brass panels. Immersion tests in a 3% NaCl solution showed a remarkable enhancement in paint disbonding resistance for the paint film of ISPL on wood and metals compared to that of the UML sample. The paint film protective performance of ISPLs is further evidenced by the lattice pattern tape testings, and by the cathodic delamination and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. Stabilité au stockageIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : A single step in-situ phosphatizing coating (ISPC) can be formulated by pre-dispersing an optimal amount of in-situ phosphatizing reagents (ISPRs) into the paint system. The technique of ISPC is applied to a high-solids polyestermalemine baking enamel using a designed ISPR-2. The in-can stability of ISPC is verified using rheological measurements. The coating properties and protective performance of the ISPC are compared to those of the multi-step coating of control sample (MCCS). The immersion tests in a 3% NaCl solution and salt spray testings show a significant improvement in paint disbondment from the X scribe for ISPC. The observed coating performance enhancement of ISPC over MCCS is confirmed from the multi-functionality of ISPRs. Phosphate chemistry proceeds via an acid-base type of interaction, P-O-Mn+, and polymer chemistry generates a covalent P-O-C linkage with the polymer network. solvantsIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Although the solvent component is a transient ingredient in paint, its quality and appropriateness will be apparent for the life of the coating. Film integrity, appearance, and application are significantly affected by the nature of the solvent. Thus, the solvent plays a very important role in the film formation and durability even though it is not a permanent component.
Two properties that are of the utmost importance when selecting the proper solvent for any end use are solvency and evaporation rate. In paints, the solvent must dissolve the resin and reduce its viscosity so that the paint can be applied. Evaporation is subsequently necessary, not only as part of the drying process, but to control the coating viscosity at various stages of drying.
Initial coating viscosity depends on the solubility of the resin(s) and the solvency of the solvent(s). Viscosity at various stages of drying depends, additionally, upon the sovent evaporation rate. As the solvent evaporates, film viscosity increases. The solvent must evaporate relatively quickly during initial drying to prevent excessive flow, but it must evaporate slowly enough to provide sufficient levelling and adhesion. In lacquer coatings, this is accomplished by varying the levels of fast, medium, and slow evaporating solvents.
The most widely used solvents in the coatings industry are hydrocarbons and oxygenated solvents. Their consumption in coatings is shown in Figure 1.Permalink : https://e-campus.itech.fr/pmb/opac_css/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=17856
