Traction (mécanique)Index. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : Thirty Boer × Spanish and 29 Spanish wethers were used in a trial to determine the effects of goat breed, supplementation level, and age on the mechanical properties of chrome-tanned and glutaraldehyde-tanned goat skin. Six Boer and five Spanish wethers were harvested at the beginning of the trial with the remaining animals assigned to four groups, having equal breed numbers, receiving either a high or low supplement amount daily. Two groups were harvested after 110 days and the remaining groups after an additional 108 days. Skins were removed by hand, split down the dorsal midline, and salted. The left half of each skin was chrome-tanned and the right half was tanned using a glutaraldehyde based tannage. Tanning goat skins using chromium resulted in stronger leather than that produced using glutaraldehyde. Increasing age led to decreased % elongation and increased leather stiffness. The effects of supplementation level were of lesser importance than tannage or age upon the strength characteristics of leather produced. Boer goat leather was thicker than Spanish goat leather, although tensile strength was unaffected by breed. Goat skins were not shaved to an equal thickness during the tanning process, perhaps leading to some of the breed differences seen, notably in % elongation and fracture energy. Therefore, further research is needed to evaluate characteristics of shaved skins. Enzymes protéolytiquesUne enzyme protéolytique est une enzyme capable de couper une protéine en plusieurs fragments ou peptides. La trypsine, la papaïne, la pepsine, la chymotrypsine, la plasmine, la subtilisine... sont capables de couper une protéine, chaque enzyme étant spécifique de certains sites particuliers de cette protéine. C'est ainsi, par exemple, qu'une immunoglobuline G est découpée par la papaïne en un fragment Fc et deux fragments Fab, comme l'a montré Porter en 1959.

An enzymatic agent was used as an alternative to conventional chemical dehairing methods. Ultrafiltration of the enzymatic dehairing bath was carried out during the unhairing operation thus creating an enzymatic membrane reactor for the production of dehaired skins.
The operating system, analytical measurements and microscopical observations on the treated skins in comparison with the control group (lime-sulphide process) are reported and discussed.
The results obtained show the possibility to reduce the environmental impact caused mainly by the aqueous stream coming from conventional dehairing. Other advantages obtained using the coupled enzymatic/UF system were: control of enzyme action; reduction of sulphide requirement: easy recovery of hair with consequent reduction of polluting load and of cleaning-up costs; the possibility of reusing the recovered hair ; simplification of wastewater cleaning-up processes : increased opening-up of the fibre structure and production of softer leather; plus the possibility of avoiding the bating operation, thus obtaining savings in terms of time, work, water and chemicals.Note de contenu : - MATERIALS AND METHODS : Proteolytic enzyme - Unhairing tests - Unhairing tests in the enzyme membrane reactor

HennéIndex. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : In the present work, antimicrobial activity of the aqueous extract from leaves of Lawsonia inermis (henna) has been evaluated. Two gram positive and five gram negative bacterial strains isolated from raw goat skins and three fungal species isolated from finished leathers have been utilized for the antimicrobial studies using aqueous extract from henna leaves. Gram-positive bacteria have found to be completely inhibited by henna at concentrations of 650 ppm and gram negative bacteria have been inhibited by henna concentration between 780 to 910 ppm. Growths of all fungal strains isolated have been inhibited by henna extract at a concentration of 1300 ppm. This study clearly demonstrates that henna offers good antimicrobial activity against the bacterial and fungal species. Tannage Résumé : Vegetable tannins have been studied over the years with an aim to reduce the pollution load caused by chrome tanning. Although mimosa tannins have been utilized commercially, they are expensive and not readily available. The purpose of this study was to assess the physical properties of leather tanned with banana leaf midribs tannins in order to determine their suitability as vegetable tannins. Selected banana leaf midrib samples were collected from Gikondi village in Mukurweini, Nyeri County, Kenya. They were shade-dried and ground into powder. The skins were processed conventionally using banana leaf midribs tannins of Musa sapientum Linn. and ‘Muraru’ (AA genome), with mimosa as a control. The physical properties of the resultant leathers were determined following the standard IUP methods. It was found that Musa sapenitum Linn, ‘Muraru’ (AA genome) and mimosa-tanned leathers had average shrinkage temperatures of 80.33 ± 0.74°C, 78.67 ± 0.47°C and 81.67 ± 0.94°C, respectively. The properties of the tanned leathers were compared with those of the control-tanned leather. Assessment of the physical properties indicated that the leathers met the minimum recommended values safe for Musa sapentium Linn-tanned leather, which failed at 30,000 flexes. These results indicate that banana leaf midribs can be used as an organic tanning agent source for production of leathers from goatskins.
