SyntansIndex. décimale : 675.2 Préparation du cuir naturel. Tannage Résumé : Effect of retanning on the thermal stability of leather is eliciting increasing attention. However, the relationship between the hydrophilicity of retanning agents and the heat resistance of leather and the corresponding mechanism remain unclear. Herein, phenolic formaldehyde syntans (PFSs) were selected as models to explore the effect of the hydrophilicity of retanning agents on the thermal stability of retanned leather. The thermal stability of leather was closely correlated to the hydrophilic group content (sulfonation degree) of PFSs. As the sulfonation degree increased, the water absorption rate of PFSs and their retanned leathers decreased, whereas the thermal stability of leather increased. Molecular dynamics simulation results proved that the introduction of PFSs could reduce the binding ability of collagen molecules with water and thus decreased the water molecules around the PFS-treated collagen. These results may provide guidance for the tanners to select retanning agents reasonably to improve the thermal stability of leather. C'est donc un agent blanchissant efficace qui sert de désinfectant et (à haute concentration) d'oxydant ou monergol dans les fusées spatiales.

Tannage Résumé : The use of oxidizing agent, such as hydrogen peroxide, was reported to shorten the oxidation process time of chamois tanning. Appropriate conditions for this tanning are needed in order to improve its process efficiency, and to obtain a satisfactory leather quality. The objectives of our study were to investigate the effects of oxidation times in chamois tanning on the quality of the resulting leather, and to determine the best condition of the oxidation time. The experiments were conducted by tanning pickled goatskin for 4, 6, and 8 hours oxidation times inside a rotary drum, and 1, 2, and 3 days of oxidation times outside the drum. The physical, chemical, and organoleptic properties of the leathers were then tested. This study showed that they fulfilled the quality requirements for chamois leather. The best conditions for oxidation were oxidation times of eight hours inside, and one day outside a rotary drum. Therefore, the use of hydrogen peroxide oxidizing agent shortened the oxidation process outside the rotary drum in chamois leather production from nine to two days. Tannage Résumé : A disadvantage of chamois leather tanning practiced nowadays is that its oxidation process takes relatively long time, i.e. 9 to 14 days. The use of an oxidizing agent, such as sodium percarbonate was reported to shorten the tanning oxidation process. However, the price of this oxidizing agent is relatively high; a constraint in its application. Other oxidizing agents, such as hydrogen peroxide, may have the same function of accelerating the process. The objectives of this study were to investigate the effects of type and concentration of oxidizing agents in order to obtain the optimum combination of process acceleration and chamois leather characteristics. This study consisted of the leather tanning with rubber seed oil with oil oxidation comparing two types of oxidizing agents at three concentrations of each oxidizing agents; testing of physical, chemical, and organoleptic properties of the leathers, and microscopic studies of the leathers. The results of this study indicate that hydrogen peroxide could be used as oxidizing agents for the chamois leather manufacture, since the chamois leather produced met the quality standards. The best treatment of this trial was hydrogen peroxide at 6% (w/w based on of the weight of rubber seed oil applied). The use of hydrogen peroxide could shorten the oxidation process from 9-14 days to about three days. Tannage Résumé : Intensive leather making techniques in an eco-sensitive world have increased the attraction of a tanning system based on natural products such as plant polyphenolics. However, there is also a distinct disadvantage in the usage of such materials because of the high organic loading of the effluent which is also difficult to degrade due to the high oxygen demand. We have examined the treatment of vegetable tannery effluents aiming at the reduction of the pollution load. Two methods have been evaluated, one based on precipitation of tannins as zinc-tannate and another with oxidative degradation after precipitation. In the precipitation method, 0.5% wattle solution at pH10 is precipitated as zinc-tannate giving a 73% reduction in COD. A further reduction of the chemical oxygen demand by 97% has been obtained with the two-stage approach of precipitation followed by oxidative degradation in the presence of an immobilized iron catalyst. This integrated approach provides a viable solution to the problem of vegetable tannins in wastewaters. Tannage Résumé : A set of chrome recycling trials have been carried out, to determine the extent of the influence that chrome recycling has on the colour and properties of the resultant leathers.
Initially chrome recycle liquor was obtained from a commercial tannery that had been continuously chrome recycling for a period of 18 months. A total of 8 cycles were then carried out at LIRI, using 4 sides per cycle, with the matching sides being processed by a conventional chrome tannage.
