Tannage Résumé : Our research group previously established a practical approach for salt-free chromium tanning by changing the order of addition of masking salts (COAMS) for electrolyte-cum-masking effect. The present work deals with the modified COAMS process for developing a salt-chromium-free tanning system using aluminium. The tanning conditions such as Al to masking salt (cirtate) ratio, Al2O3 offer, the effect of phenolic syntan, and its order of addition on tanning performance have been studied in detail. It was found that the addition of 3% sodium carbonate (based on the weight of aluminium sulfate) along with aluminium sulfate reduces the acidity without affecting the tanning performance and leather quality. The ideal conditions for the pickle-free aluminium tanning were found to be 1.5% Al2O3 offer, 5% phenolic syntan offer, and an Al to citrate ratio of 1:0.2. It was also found that the order of addition of phenolic syntan did not affect the tanning performance. Furthermore, in comparison to leather produced without syntan, the combined effect of aluminum and phenolic syntan raises the shrinkage temperature by 6°C (Without syntan: 74°, with syntan80°) and decreases the rate of shrinkage by 74%. However, the addition of phenolic syntan did not improve Al exhaustion and leaching resistance to water. The physical characteristics and fiber compactness have been improved by the addition of phenolic syntan. SEX-EDAX study reveals that the aluminum is uniformly distributed throughout the cross-section.

Tannage Résumé : Mass transfer of chemicals greatly affects leather production efficiency and product quality. Leather shows different motions in a rotating drum during processing, which is strongly associated with chemicals’ mass transfer. However, how leather motions affect mass transfer remains unclear, which disfavors highly efficient leather manufacturing process. Here, different leather motion states were obtained by adjusting the drum rotation speed. Experimental results showed that the duration of leather rolling motion greatly increased by 41% when the rotation speed increased from 5 r/min to 20 r/min, and the uptake of the tanning agent was consequently improved, which indicated that the rolling motion is beneficial to mass transfer. Computational fluid dynamics simulation results showed that the mass transfer rate under rolling motion was higher than those under slipping, elevating and hanging motions, because the flow velocity and concentration gradient near the leather surface were higher under rolling motion. Accordingly, increasing the rolling motion enhanced the mass transfer in leather processing. This work identifies the leather motion beneficial for mass transfer and provides guidance on operating condition optimization and drum design for high-efficiency leather production. Tannage Résumé : Understanding the persuasive mechanisms of the accessibility and interactions of chromium complex with collagen is an important fundamental issue for maximizing the utilization of chromium during the transformation of collagen to leather by chrome tanning technology. This study details these mechanisms through process monitoring of the effects of technical conditions of chromium diffusion and its binding with the collagen matrix. The results indicated that there was no discernible impact of carboxylic masking agents on both diffusion and binding behavior of chromium complexes at low pH before basification, but it portentously declined the total chromium absorption at the end of chrome tanning. The results made known that in the course of chrome tanning, the higher pH conditions encouraged the diffusion and binding behavior of chromium complexes with collagen matrix not only before but after the basification as well. Chrome tanning at high pH did not cause excessive surface tanning effects of the leather, but the WAXD study indicated that there was much more crosslinking (both intra and inter triple helix) of collagen fibers in the inner layers of leather matrix, which had a robust impact on the fullness, tightness and stiffness of the finished leather. These findings could provide more theoretical foundations for the development of high exhaustion chrome tanning technology as a method for reduced chromium emission and improved the quality of leather during leather manufacture.
