The structure of the QPS-bearing WPU has been identified, and their thermal stability, mechanical property, and antimicrobial performance have been investigated. The results reveal that the incorporation of QPS slightly reduces the thermal stability of WPU material but would not affects its usability as leather coating. Despite the presence of hydrophobic benzene in QPS structure, the strong hydration of its cationic groups leads to the increased surface contact angle (SCA) and water absorption rate (WAR) of the films, suggesting that the water resistance of the films needs to be improved for the purpose of leather coatings. Antibacterial tests demonstrate that when the QPS content is 20 wt%, QPS-bearing WPU shows effective antimicrobial activity against bacteria. The WPU containing QPS prepared in this study is a non-leaching antimicrobial material and has great potential application as leather coating. Note de contenu : - Materials

Langues : Américain (ame) Index. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : Resistance to animal and human therapeutic antibiotics is well known and understood among both the scientific and lay community. Performance failures with industrial microbicides are commonly discussed as if the same phenomenon occurs here also. Much of this is indeed fantasy, as the mode of action of most, but not all, industrial microbicides are based on a fundamentally different principle than are therapeutic antibiotics. Industrial microbicides are designed to be broad spectrum and achieve this by attacking some fundamental principle that is present in most microorganisms and without which the organism cannot survive. Antibiotics, on the other hand, are designed to be as narrow spectrum as possible, so that side effects in the animal or human host are minimized. A clear understanding of why a broad spectrum microbicide fails in a particular situation is necessary in order to have a successful program. Application errors, such as using an inappropriate biocide and calling it resistance, will ultimately be economically detrimental. Using different modes of action products in sequence is understood in antibiotic science to encourage true resistance. This may very well also promote resistance in broad spectrum microbicides. A thorough understanding of microbicides and the particular industrial situation in which they are used is necessary to have a successful, cost-effective program, while minimizing promotion of resistance. Transfert de masseIndex. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : Bating pelt with protease is an important process, which removes unwanted non-collagenous proteins from the pelt and moderately disperse hide collagen network. However, the grain surface, may be excessively hydrolyzed during bating due to the longer retention time of protease in the grain than in the middle layer caused by the low mass transfer rate of protease in pelt. Here, the effects of protease dosage, common auxiliaries and molecular weight of protease on protease transfer during bating were investigated so that we can find the key points to avoid excessive collagen damage, particularly in the grain. Observably, increasing protease dosage led to faster protease transfer and softer leather, but along with more considerable grain damage. Using penetrating agent JFC (fatty alcohol-polyoxyethylene ether) and ammonium sulfate enhanced protease transfer and simultaneously alleviated collagen damage due to the decrease in interfacial tension and electrostatic attraction between protease and pelt, respectively. Additionally, proteases with lower molecular weight transferred faster in pelt, which suggests that a potential strategy to solve the conflict between the mass transfer and the reaction of protease in pelt might be to produce/employ smaller bating proteases.
