Langues : Américain (ame) Index. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : The length of time needed for brine curing of raw hides and skins, a minimum of 18 h, is a time consuming process. In this paper we initially report the results of an investigation of the stratigraphic distribution of sodium chloride and water in fleshed hides cured for varying intervals of time. We demonstrated that salt entered the hide mainly from the flesh side. Water, on the other hand, was withdrawn from both sides of the hide; the epidermis acted as a semipermeable membrane. Three commercial degreasers as well as a glycolipid surfactant (sophorolipid) were tested as brine curing additives and their efficiency evaluated according to the moisture, salt, salt saturation and fat content levels in the brine cured hide. One of the commercial degreasers, when used at 0.5% w/w, significantly removed fat from the hide as well as enhanced the uptake of salt. The sophorolipid also was an effective degreasing agent, decreasing the fat content of the brine-cured hide and, if used in excess, significantly increasing the uptake of salt. The data presented here confirmed that the usage of an appropriate degreasing agent in the brine is a suitable option for reducing the turn-around times in raceways and thus creating additional curing capacity. Although formic acid is used for fixing of dyes in leather processing, difficulties do arise in fixation of certain dye stuffs. Further high quantities of formic acid used do create health issues and adds to high cost of production. Compounds such as formic acid, acetic acid, mixture of organic acids and quaternary ammonium compounds have been found to function as dye fixatives. The efficacy of these compounds to function as dye fixatives for various dye stuffs and substances either alone or along with formic acid has been studied in detail in this work. The physical and color characteristics of leather and spent liquor analysis have been carried out. As a result, a part of the chemicals inevitably remain in the tannery wastewater and form major pollutants. Biological treatment plays a significant role in removing these chemicals from wastewater and biodegradability of these chemicals is directly related to their environmental friendliness. Recently, we have been undertaking a systematic evaluation of the biodegradability of typical leather chemicals so as to characterize their environmental impact as exactly as possible. In this paper, the biodegradation behaviours of six typical fatliquor components, including sulphated castor, sulphated neatsfoot oil, sulphated fish oil, lecithin, chlorinated paraffin and alkyl sulfonyl chloride, were investigated. It has been found that four of them, sulphated castor, neatsfoot oil, fish oil and lecithin, can be effectively degraded by the activated sludge from the wastewater treatment plant of the tannery, which suggests that these four kinds of fatliquors are suitable for use in leather making in consideration of their environmental friendliness. However, the two other kinds of fatliquors, chlorinated paraffin and alkyl sulfonyl chloride, cannot be degraded by activated sludge and the presence of alkyl sulfonyl chloride in wastewater will lead to poisoning of the activated sludge, which indicates that these two kinds of fatliquors should be limited in use. As a result, porometic materials were compared with regular and patent leather under several heat and flammability conditions. The findings showed porometic burn when exposed to open flames and are indeed potentially hazardous; while the leathers, including patent leather, which has an easy-care finish like the poromerics, are fine retardant. Approximately 90% of the hides produced in the United States are being exported; the remaining 10% are mostly tanned into leather. At the present time hides and leather are visually inspected and ranked for quality, usable area, and sale price. However, visual inspection is not reliable for detecting defects, which are usually hidden inside the material or under the hair in fresh hides. This manual assessment is not uniform among operators, and often leads to disputes over fair price. Development of a non-contact nondestructive method to accurately evaluate the quality of hides and leather is urgently needed. We previously reported the research results for airborne ultrasonic (AU) testing using non-contact transducers to evaluate the quality of hides and leather. We demonstrated the ability of AU to reveal defects in hides and leather that are difficult to be found during visual inspection.
