We have studied the principle and method of testing leather fullness and softness by compression and Lastometer type experiments. A variety of Lastometer apparatus for testing softness had been designed and manufactured. Some parameters, such as compression/decompression and fullness work, have been calculated using the experimental data. The results are coincident with those of HEM (hand evaluation method). This testing procedure appears to be reliable for measuring leather fullness and softness. Note de contenu : - PRINCIPLE

RayuresIndex. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : In the Republic of Ireland the gross annual output of undressed hides and skins and manufactured leather goods exceeded £16 million in 1976. Whilst the hides of some countries command high prices because of their consistent good grading and consequent suitability for the manufacture of high priced goods, local hides are often down-graded because of defects of the grain or upper surface. Damage may occur ante-mortem. Post-mortem damage may occur at the time of flaying, as a result of poor storage or when processed.
Tancous et al. (1959) considered that stable flies, horn flies and sucking flies caused leather damage but produced no experimental evidence, however Everett et al. (1977) provide evidence that in the United States the prime cause of damage was bard ticks, with Demodex bovis (the hair follicle mite) also being important.
In a preliminary survey conducted in the Republic of Ireland, Baker (1973) showed the most common defect to be that of multiple scratches with consequent down-grading. He considered the cause to be ectoparasites. To substantiate the hypothesis that the multiple scratch defect results from ectoparasitism the following survey and experiments were undertaken.Note de contenu : - Table 1 : Survey of irish hides

According to K. S. Kruszelnicki, each year, the 30 million cattle in Australia cover over 20 000 square kilometres of grazing land with dung. Goodness knows how much is produced by the world's cattle population every year. For the leather industry at least, so long as this dung stays at ground level where it can naturallydegrade and be incorporated into the soil, it is not a problem to the tanner. However, in some countries cattle are kept in confined areas, eg when they are brought into sheds for the winter months, where they may not choose to lay in their own waste, but ave no choice. In such circumstances cattle inevitably get some of this dung stuck to their hides and this can be a serious problem for the tanner. So what are theses problems ? The purpose of this study was the conversion of waste sludge from domestic tannery factories into useful organic fertilizer. The research team at the Tongtian Star Group in Zhejiang Province in China used an aerobic high temperature fermentation process to accomplish this aim, with warehouse-style equipment based on practicality, efficiency, and energy conservation principles. The results indicated that the organic fertilizer produced using bio-fermentation technology with integrated tannery sludge as a carrier is suitable for use in agriculture and forestry. The components of the organic fertilizer comply with the national standard. The project indicated that it is feasible to produce an organic fertilizer with tannery sludge.
