Langues : Anglais (eng) Index. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : A mathematical model of the non-stationary non-isothermal microclimate inside the worn shoe was developed on the basis of the balance of moisture and heat transport in the system foot-shoe-surroundings. The solution of the model formed by a set of two partial differential equations and pertinent boundary and initial conditions was performed by use of the Laplace transformation. On the basis of the knowledge of a number of material and process parameters, the time dependences of humidity and temperature inside the shoe were calculated. The theoretical predictions agree well with experimental data. The natural material (side leather) has proved to be a better than microporous synthetics with which a favourable influence of the increased humidity sorption was observed for short-time wear, i.e. up to 4 h. The model can be used both for the prediction of the microclimate inside particular shoes and for comparison of footwear made from different materials. Langues : Américain (ame) Index. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : The physical testing of leather is currently a destructive process, wherein cutouts are taken off the tannery floor for mechanical testing. These destructive tests are not only time-consuming, but also wasteful of leather. Therefore there is great incentive to develop a nondestructive test that will drastically improve leather quality control. We recently examined the feasibility of using the acoustic emission (AE) technique to nondestructively measure the mechanical properties of leather, particularly tear strength and softness; both properties are critical for leather especially for upholstery and automobile applications. In this investigation, a rotational acoustic sensor was contacted with the leather samples to collect their AE quantities and properties. Observations showed an excellent correlation between the tear strength of leather and the corresponding acoustic counts, read from an acoustic emission analyzer. Data also indicated a close relationship between the softness of leather and the corresponding ratio of acoustic hits to energy. The observed phenomena implied that the tear strength and softness of leather can be nondestructively determined by measuring the acoustic quantities with a rotational sensor crossing over the leather to be tested. The results of this research have become the framework in designing an in-line nondestructive evaluation method for leather quality. Langues : Américain (ame) Index. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : Leather is usually characterized by its mechanical properties, but the details of stressstrain curves give little information about what is happening when leather is stretched. We have previously introduced the technique of acoustic emission spectroscopy to examine processes in leather during deformation. Here, one such process, disruption of adhesions, was examined in calfskin and mature cattlehide using acoustic emission spectroscopy.Calfskin and mature cattlehide had similar behavior, emitting sounds separately characteristic of the grain and the corium.Breakage of adhesions and fibers appeared earlier in corium than in grain.By observing the increase in energy and frequency of acoustic pulses it is possible to determine when the leather is about to fail, well before it tears. Titre : Nondestructive testing using rotational acoustic emission sensors Type de document : texte imprimé Auteurs : Cheng-Kung Liu, Auteur ; Gary L. DiMaio, Auteur ; Nicholas P. Latona, Auteur Année de publication : 2005 Article en page(s) : p. 438-446 Note générale : Bibliogr. Langues : Américain (ame) Index. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : At the present time, testing the mechanical properties of leather is a destructive process, wherein cutouts are taken off the tannery floor for mechanical testing. Under a cooperative R&D agreement (CRADA), we recently investigated the feasibility of using the acoustic emission (AE) technique to dynamically and nondestructively measure the mechanical properties of leather. The long-range goal of this collaborative effort is the production of an AE instrument, which will provide the leather industry with a nondestructive way in which to monitor the quality of leather at each of the leather-making stages. In this investigation, a rotational acoustic sensor was rolled across the leather samples to collect their AE quantities such as waveforms, frequency, hits, counts and energy. The software AE-Win was utilized to capture and record the data, and the neural network software NOESIS was subsequently used for data analysis. Observations showed an excellent correlation between the softness of leather and the corresponding cumulative acoustic counts. We also used this dynamic method to characterize the grain break of leather. Results showed that the difference in grain break could be determined from the amount of acoustic energy collected from moving the AE sensor over a leather sample laid inside a half pipe. The grain break decreased as the AE energy increased. The higher AE energy is an indication of stiffer leather; therefore, the results revealed that stiffer leather is prone to bad grain break. Data also demonstrated that the thicker samples tended to have poorer grain break. We derived a predictive model that could be very useful for nondestructively testing grain break using the AE method described in this report. Results also showed a close relationship between the tensile strength and AE energy or duration obtained from testing. In short, this study demonstrated that the softness, tensile strength and grain break could be nondestructively determined by measuring the acoustic quantities with a rotational sensor rolling over the leather. In this work, a series of nonionic short-chain fluorinated surfactants (Fn-Fn, where n = 2, 4, or 6) were successfully prepared and used as fatliquoring auxiliaries in the fatliquoring process of chrome-tanned goat skin. The chemical structure of these nonionic short-chain fluorinated surfactants was characterized by FTIR and the molecular weight was determined by GPC. The surface tension measurement results revealed that these three fluorinated surfactants showed excellent surface activities. The effect of type and dosage of Fn-Fn as well as fatliquoring temperature on fatliquoring properties of chrome-tanned goat skin were estimated by the softness and physical mechanical properties characteristic of resultant leather. The results revealed that the leather treated with 1 wt% F4-F4 at the fatliquoring temperature of 40oC showed the best overall performance, whose softness and physical mechanical properties were improved significantly. Moreover, the collagen fiber morphology and waterproof performance of leather treated with Fn-Fn were also investigated which showed that the addition of Fn-Fn in the fatliquoring process could promote the loosening of collagen fibers while effectively enhancing the water repellency of the leather surface. Therefore, such types of nonionic short-chain fluorinated surfactants are promising to be as desired fatliquoring auxiliaries in the leather industry.
