Solidification behaviour of PA6/iPP blends at high cooling rates / C. Colletti in INTERNATIONAL POLYMER PROCESSING, Vol. XV, N° 1 (03/2000)

Titre : Solidification behaviour of PA6/iPP blends at high cooling rates Type de document : texte imprimé Auteurs : C. Colletti, Auteur ; S. Piccarolo, Auteur ; A. Valenza, Auteur Année de publication : 2000 Article en page(s) : p. 46-52 Note générale : Bibliogr. Langues : Anglais (eng) Index. décimale : 668.9 Polymères Résumé : The non isothermal crystallization behaviour of two model blends of immiscible polymers (an isotactic polypropylene and a polyamide-6) was examined by a quenching procedure within a range of cooling rates from 0.1 to above 1000°C/s in order to emulate the solidification conditions arising during polymer processing. The final structure of the blends was analyzed by density and WAXD and the transition from stable to metastable phases in the blends and the pure homopolymers was compared examining their dependence on cooling rate. This shows that crystallization in the blends is always faster since the transitions move to larger cooling rates. Observation of morphological details suggests that this can be due to enhanced nucleation at the interface. The density variation in the case of the polyamide-6 rich blend is larger than expected from an additive volume contribution which may be ascribed to development of microvoids at the interface. In the case of the isotactic polypropylene rich blend the additive volume contribution is consistent with experimental observations. Titre : Solidification criterion on shrinkage predictions for semi-crystalline injection moulded samples Type de document : texte imprimé Auteurs : A. J. Pontes, Auteur ; R. Pantani, Auteur ; G. Titomanlio, Auteur ; A. S. Pouzada, Auteur Année de publication : 2000 Article en page(s) : p. 284-290 Note générale : Bibliogr. Langues : Anglais (eng) Index. décimale : 668.9 Polymères Résumé : The phenomenon of shrinkage in injection moulding is particularly evident in semi-crystalline polymers. During cooling, these materials experience a transition from a completely amorphous to a partially crystalline status, which results in a severe change of all material characteristics, including volumetric parameters. In this study an iPP was injection moulded in a rectangular impression (120mm x 630mm x 62 mm) with a 1.5mm thick line gate. The influence of holding pressure and time, and geometry constraints on linear shrinkage was explored. In-mould shrinkage was measured by means of a recent method based on strain gauges. Experimental results are compared with predictions for shrinkage obtained by C-Mold and a code developed at the University of Salerno, which takes into account crystallisation kinetics. The solidification criterion resulted to be extremely relevant for shrinkage predictions. Polymères -- Solubilité
Solutions de polymèreIndex. décimale : 668.9 Polymères Résumé : Polymer solutions are widely used in various applications such as paints, inks, adhesives etc., prepared by dissolving polymer in given solvent. Solubility of polymer in given solvent is important. The polymer solvent compatibility can be expressed by considering Hildebrand Solubility Parameter Δ. The solubility parameter is a numerical value that indicates the relative solvency behaviour of a specific solvent. It is defined square root of cohesive energy density (c)1/2. Materials with similar solubility parameters will be able to interact with each other, resulting in solvation, miscibility or swelling. The principal limitation of the solubility parameter approach is that it applies on ly to associated solutions ("liike dissolves like"). The reason for th is limitation is in kinds of polar contributions that give rise to the total cohesive energy densities in each case. These slight disparities in polar contributions result in considerable differences in solubility behaviour. Three types of polar interactions that are most commonly used in solubility theories, dispersion forces, polar forces, and hydrogen bonding forces. The Hildebrand solubility parameter is used in conjunction with only one or two of these forces (i.e. Hildebrand value and hydrogen bonding value). Hansen solubility parameters were developed by Charles M. Hansen in 1967. They are based on the idea that like dissolves like where one molecule is defined as being ‘like’ another if it bonds to itself in a similar way. To determine if the parameters of two molecules (usually a solvent and a polymer) are within range, a value called interaction radius (RO) is given to the substance being dissolved and (Ra), the distance between the solvent and the material in Hansen space are calculated and hence relative energy difference, RE = Ra/Ro. RED < 1 the molecules are al ike and will dissolve, RED = 1 the system will partially dissolve and RED > 1 the system will not dissolve. Flory-Huggins solution theory is a mathematical model of the thermodynamics of polymer solutions which takes account of the great dissimilarity in molecular sizes in adapting the usual expression for the entropy of mixing. In Flory-Huggins theory The polymer-solvent interaction parameter "chi" x is depends on the nature of both the solvent and the solute. The interaction parameter can be expressed as sum of an entropic and enthalpic contribution x = xH + xS. where xH is enthalpic component and xS is entropic component. The enthalpic component xH is expressed by Hildebrand Solubility Parameter xH = Vseg (6a - 6b )2 / R T .
Interaction parameter is also temperature dependence, x ~ 1/1-. As temperature is increase, x decreases. At particular
temperature the value of the x becomes 0.5. The temperature at which the value becomes 0.5 is called O (theta) temperature. For a given polymer — solvent O temperature is around room temperature then solvent is cal led O solvent for that polymer. In general, measurements of the properties of polymer solutions depend on the solvent. However, when a theta solvent is used, the measured characteristics are independent of the solvent.Note de contenu : - Solubility of polymers

RhéologieIndex. décimale : 668.9 Polymères Résumé : The degree of film-width reduction or necking during film-casting is analyzed for three metallocene-catalyzed linear low density polyethylenes, LLDPE, with varying degrees of sparse long-chain branching, LCB. The resins included three sparsely LCB polyethylene, PE, materials with varying LCB content ranging from linear to 0.57 LCB/10000 CH2 along with a Ziegler-Natta polymerized LLDPE and a tubular free-radical polymerized low density polyethylene, LDPE. The last two resins are used as reference materials. The primary objective of this analysis is to evaluate whether uniaxial extensional rheological characteristics, in particular strain-hardening, that are a result of LCB influence the film-necking properties. At the lowest drawdown ratio, necking is observed to be reduced with increasing LCB, and thus strain-hardening characteristics. At the higher drawdown ratios it is observed that LCB no longer reduces necking and the curves merge to the results found for linear PE, except in the case of LDPE, which shows reduced necking at all drawdown ratios. Furthermore, comparisons of film necking are also made to separate the effects of molecular weight distribution, MWD, and LCB. The results indicate that both broadening the MWD and the addition of sparse LCB reduce the degree of necking, but to a lesser degree in the case of broadening the MWD. Analysis of the uniaxial extensional and dynamic shear rheology with the pom-pom constitutive model reveals that a distribution of branches along shorter relaxation time modes is important in reducing necking at higher drawdown ratios. Factors such as shear viscosity effects, extrudate swell, and non-isothermal behavior were eliminated as contributing factors.
