The thermochemical process is used to recover the carbon fibres, which are then recycled into new thermopla5tic compo¬sites. These second-generation materials possess mechanical properties that are comparable to those of materials made using virgin carbon fibres. The processes to generate them can be difficult, however. It is shown how physical foaming with CO2 can be used as a first step to assess the potentials of such materials. For investigations of such kind an autoclave on a laboratory scale which allows pressure variations up to 300 bars and temperatures up to 300 °C was set up. The samples are saturated with supercritical carbon dioxide (s.c. CO2) which acts as a foaming agent. Depending on the process and material parameters different foam characteristics and cell morphologies were obtained and characterised. The potential of this method is demonstrated for two different classes of advanced polymer materials, thermoplastic fluoropolymers (FEP), and a silicone resin. In the case of the fluoropolymer, previously prepared films were foamed and the effects of various process parameters on the foam characteristics were investigated. Besides the general potential of foams from fluoropolymers, they are candidates for polymeric piezoelectric materials with a relatively high temperature stability. Silicone polymers possess some properties superior to common organic polymers. First results on the foaming behaviour of a silicone resin are presented. Simulation par ordinateurIndex. décimale : 668.4 Plastiques, vinyles Résumé : When selecting a melt-filtration system, the initial pressure drop is a critical parameter. We used heuristic optimization algorithms to develop general analytical equations for estimating the dimensionless pressure loss of square and Dutch woven screens in polymer processing and recycling. We present a mathematical description – without the need for further numerical methods – of the dimensionless pressure loss of non-Newtonian polymer melt-flows through woven screens. Applying the theory of similarity, we first simplified, and then transformed into dimensionless form, the governing equations. By varying the characteristic independent dimensionless influencing parameters, we created a comprehensive parameter set. For each design point, the nonlinear governing equations were solved numerically. We subsequently applied symbolic regression based on genetic programming to develop models for the dimensionless pressure drop. Finally, we validated our models against experiments using both virgin and slightly contaminated in-house and post-industrial recycling materials. Our regression models predict the experimental data accurately, yielding a mean relative error of MRE = 13.7%. Our modeling approach, the accuracy of which we have proven, allows fast and stable prediction of the initial pressure drop of polymer-melt flows through square woven and Dutch weave screens, rendering further numerical simulations unnecessary. RhéologieIndex. décimale : 668.4 Plastiques, vinyles Résumé : In the present work the benefits of using graphics processing units (GPU) to aid the design of complex geometry profile extrusion dies, are studied. For that purpose, a 3D finite volume based code that employs unstructured meshes to solve and couple the continuity, momentum and energy conservation equations governing the fluid flow, together with a constitutive equation, was used. To evaluate the possibility of reducing the calculation time spent on the numerical calculations, the numerical code was parallelized in the GPU, using a simple programing approach without complex memory manipulations. For verification purposes, simulations were performed for three benchmark problems: Poiseuille flow, lid-driven cavity flow and flow around a cylinder. Subsequently, the code was used on the design of two real life extrusion dies for the production of a medical catheter and a wood plastic composite decking profile. To evaluate the benefits, the results obtained with the GPU parallelized code were compared, in terms of speedup, with a serial implementation of the same code, that traditionally runs on the central processing unit (CPU). The results obtained show that, even with the simple parallelization approach employed, it was possible to obtain a significant reduction of the computation times. This study uses a gas counter pressure technique to inhibit fountain flow and employs a visualization mold design to observe the influence of counter pressure on melt flow behavior, in order to discuss the impact of the counter pressure mechanism on the fountain flow. The visualization mold designed herein and the clip cavity help to test the counter pressure mechanism in injection molding, while the observed particles and high-speed camera assist in observing the influence of fluid flow behavior and counter pressure on the fountain flow effect. The study observes and tracks the flow trajectory of particles in the melt, with findings showing that the closer the flow line of the melt is to the mold wall, the shorter the offset distance will be to the outward flip. Moreover, the closer to the center, the longer the offset distance of the outward flip meaning that it flips outwards in the melt-front nearby the center line and stays on the mold wall surface to form a new frozen layer. The melt-front length changes under different counter pressures and different mold temperatures. The front length changes present the inhibitory effect of counter pressure on the fountain flow, which is more apparent at the far gate than at the near gate. The melt-front lengths of the counter pressure of 0 bar at mold temperatures of 40 °C and 20 °C increase 1.5% and 4.7%, respectively, meaning that the thicker the frozen layer, the more apparent the fountain effect.
