Framework for such a modification, which particularly employs the blending of different grades of epoxy resins and water-soluble hardeners, introduction of polymer modifiers and functional additives, is analyzed in terms of colloid behavior of these paints, focusing on the main steps of self-emulsifying technology : resin/hardener co-emulsification, induction period, in-pot life and film-forming process. Langues : Anglais (eng) Index. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Environmental considerations are clearly influencing current decision making concerning barrier technology and will continue to do so in the future. Concerns around recyclability, energy conservation and air-pollution are leading to a reassessment of available barrier technologies. Against this background Zeneca Resins have been actively researching the area of moisture/water barrier coatings, which has led to the launch of a range of water based acrylic barrier coating resins (NeoCryl). This paper describes some of the fundamental work undertaken in understanding the mechanism of liquid-water and moisture vapour diffusion through an acrylic based coating. Some of the design parameters involved in developing hydrophobic acrylic copolymers are discussed, as well as the role crystalline-wax modification has to play. Wax modification is described in terms of a simple stratification model and results from Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM) and Dynamic Contact Angle Analysis (DCAA) are presented. Each of the types of solid particles has their own need for analysis and testing. These solid particles have a variety of effects on the formulation, both in the fluid state and in the final dry film. There are also several classes of these solid particles. We shall discuss the analysis/testing needs, the effects to be expected upon addition of the particles, and the particle classes, as separate sections. Note de contenu : - Analysis and testing

The paper covers European (EU) regulatory aspects relevant to RadCure products, such as the implementation of the 7th Amendment of Council Directive 67/548/EEC (Existing Chemicals Programme, Risk Assessment Directive, OECD polymer definition,...) and current regulatory developments (further extension of EC Directive 90/128 governing food contract applications, environmental labelling). The paper will also describe the strategy developed by European chemical suppliers within the RadTech association to comply with EU Directives. Emphasis will be put on topics which should be addressed globally and for which global harmonisation should be sought. This is a key step for the global introduction of new products and technologies at an acceptable cost, which is essential for the long-term sustainability of the RadCure and coating industries.
