RevêtementsIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : The time evolution of different single-pigment mill bases was investigated measuring fineness with a conventional coating grind gage. We propose a simple two-parameter model for the description of a pigment dispersion into liquid vehicles as function of the grinding time. Although the whole process depends on a complex balance between grinding equipment, pigment and vehicle, it is possible to recognize a simple well-known pattern for the breakup of pigment particle agglomerates. This allows us to establish a quantitative criterion and a practical rule for the effectiveness of the dispersion operation without limitation regarding the quality or nature of the binder or wetting agents. Revêtements -- Additifs:Peinture -- AdditifsIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Novel moisture control additives have been developed for use in higher solids polyurethane coatings. These oxazolidine-based compounds eliminate the adverse effects of humidity often seen during the application of two-pack polyurethane systems. Problems such as down glossing, pinholing, hazing and bubble entrapment can be prevented with proper application of this chemistry. These additives also remove moisture from one- and two- pack polyurethane coatings during their manufacture, thus providing superior shelf life and film properties. With this included in the experimental set-up, the copper concentration stabilizes after three weeks. The copper concentration is proportional to the amount of copper available for leaching after stabilization. These results have made us confident that this modification of ASTM D5108-90 is well adapted to copper release rate measurements. Stabilité au stockageIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Waterborn epoxy resin emulsions can be used for coating concrete surfaces and for anticorrosion primers on pretreated steel with excellent results. One of the limiting factors for their application is that emulsions, as metastable systems, have only a limited shelf-life. However, detailed information on the length of the shelf-life, and how it can be best determined and influenced has so far not been available. In this paper, different methods to monitor both the chemical and the physical stability of emulsions were evaluated, and their relevancy to practical applications established. The influence of parameters like the storage conditions or the structure of the epoxy resin was investigated. It is shown that stored at temperatures between 5 °C and 30 °C epoxy resin emulsions are perfectly stable for well over a year. Outside this temperature range, however, the stability declines rapidly. Practical suggestions for applicators to check the quality of emulsions are given.
