Titre : Water-bornes and high-solids : innovative applications Type de document : texte imprimé Auteurs : Michael J. Masciale, Auteur Année de publication : 1995 Article en page(s) : p. 16-18 Langues : Anglais (eng) Tags : 'Peinture eau' haute teneur solide' Utilisation anticorrosion' Index. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Water-borne and high solids coatings are used for compliance to regulations that limit the amount of organic solvents that may be emitted into the atmosphere. While these products are now used generally to replace their higher VOC counterparts, a number of innovative industrial applications are showing promise due to certain unique coating characteristics. An understanding of quality requirements along with application and curing parameters is paramount to the achievement of successful service performance. These same ions, when released, may cause problems with the dispersants used, yielding at best metastable pigment dispersions. Examination of typical dispersant shows the dispersions vary in effectiveness. Screening progams using only dispersant and pigment are worth the effort in producing stable colloidal systems in practice. Titre : Developing the best formulation Type de document : texte imprimé Auteurs : Charles Rooney, Auteur ; Ian Harrison, Auteur Année de publication : 1995 Article en page(s) : p. 28-31 Langues : Anglais (eng) Tags : Peinture Formulation Index. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : In the coatings industry we all realize that we do not develop products very well. Our products are too variable. They fail too often in application, in the field, and even in our own plants. We have difficulty balancing cost and performance. Finally, development projects take too long and cost too much. In our previous article (ECJ 10/94) we argued that the industry's difficulties with product development have two principal causes. First, the difficulty of translating the customer's real needs into the description of the ideal coating for his or her application. Secondly, a lack of understanding of modern methods of experimental design. The first of this pair of articles described a quantitative technique, the House of Quality, for determining exactly what the customer requires. Note de contenu : - DOE and experimental strategy

Titre : Characterization of surface structures by mechanical and optical Fourier spectra Type de document : texte imprimé Auteurs : Michael Osterhold, Auteur ; Kornelia Armbruster, Auteur Année de publication : 1995 Article en page(s) : p. 32-35 Note générale : Bibliogr. Langues : Anglais (eng) Tags : Peinture Feuil Caractérisation 'Structure surface' Rugosité Texturation 'Faisceau laser' 'Spectrométrie Fourier' Index. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : In order to investigate the influence of substrate texture on coating appearance, sheet metal and painted substrates are characterized by mechanical profilometry (Hommeltester T 4000) and by optical measurements (wave-scan, Byk). Two different kinds of substrates (laser textured sheets and sheets with different roughness levels) coated with electrodeposition paint, primer-surfacer and automotive top coat are studied. The measured surface profiles of the painted and unpainted sheets are analyzed by Fourier transform yielding the so-called autopower spectrum (square of amplitudes versus wavelength) of the investigated surface. The obtained spectra are studied with regard to characteristic wavelengths dominating the detected surface profiles. Cross-power spectra are used to describe the influence of substrate texture on top coat structure. The mechanical investigations are compared to the optical measurements. Lynn Shirey, Auteur Année de publication : 1995 Article en page(s) : p. 37-42 Langues : Anglais (eng) Tags : Peinture Feuil Caractérisation 'Chromatographie phase gazeuse' 'Spectrométrie IR' 'Transformation Fourier' masse' Index. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : The characterization of coatings utilizing thermal extraction/gas chromatography followed by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and/or mass spectrometry is a very powerful hyphenated technique capable of providing definitive answers to questions of QA/QC during the development of a paint formulation, during its manufacture, during its application, or during its investigation after a coating failure. Small recovered paint chips reveal a portion of their past history. Positive identification of generic binder types, solvent entrapment, unreacted monomer, and improper catalyzation are demonstrated. Plastic type and degree of degradation may be identified. An introduction to the versatility of the instrument is presented.
