Tannage Résumé : In a previous study a variety of physical properties and sorting character-istics of combat boot leathers made from comparable bullhides and steerhides were closely compared. The cattle involved had similar genetic and management backgrounds as well as similar ages and slaughter weights. That study anticipated a possible trend towards raising young bulls for beef because of potential economic advantages. Results of the study indicated that leather from bullhide was significantly stronger by a number of standard tests than leather from steer-hide. Since the leathers had been processed in three different tannery lots, there was latex some question as to whether this had produced differences in chemical composition which could result in differences in physical properties. Since the various lipid constituents are the result of different biological processes and serve different purposes within the hide, the contents of certain lipids vary more than others within the hide. In these studies the lipid components were determined in each of five stratigraphic layers taken from 11 areas which represented about two-thirds of the area of the right side of a steerhide. There was considerable variability in the content for each lipid class, both areawise and stratigraphically.
The lipids on the coarse-clipped and fine-clipped hair were determined for nine areas, and these also showed considerable variability.Note de contenu : - Preparation of material

It is caused by keds (melophagus ovinus), which are blood-sucking parasites that live in the wool of sheep. The defect becomes apparent only after the wool is removed during processing. It appears as a scattering of dense nodules in the grain layer of sheepskins in a characteristic pattern of distribution. Affected sheepskin leathers can be seriously downgraded, depending on the severity of the defect. In addition, cockle reduces the physical strengh of both grain and suede leathers and increases their stiffness. Our earlier studies entailed special processing to expose the cockle nodules for easier counting. When subjected to certain process modifications, however, which were suggested by a cooperating tanner, sheepskins resulted that had lower apparent cockle counts and improved appearence. This paper describes certain process modifications which were found effective in attenuating some of the grosser defects in cockled sheepskins. Approximately 80 to 85 percent of the suspended solids were removed from the effluents tested. The results subtantiate earlier laboratory studies that established the ranges of effluent compositions (pH, salt content, suspended solids, and soluble organic content) for which specific flocculation treatments are effective. Langues : Américain (ame) Index. décimale : 675.2 Préparation du cuir naturel. Tannage Résumé : A test for chemical oxygen demand (COD), requiring approximately 4 hr, is commonly used to monitor the biooxidation of wastes. A test for total organic carbon (TOC), which requires only 3 to 5 min, was compared with the more time-consuming method to determine if it could be used to estimate the COD test and to monitor the biooxidation. Both TOC and COD were determined for various proteins and amino acids, and the results of the two methods correlated well. The biooxidation of tannery unhairing wastes, complex industrial wastes characterized by high solids content, was monitored by both TOC and COD tests. The results obtained indicate that the TOC test is an acceptable alternative to the COD test when the composition of the waste does not vary significantly with time. Note de contenu : - Apparatus
