The influence of the crosslinking agent type and amount on the process of fast thermal curing and on the properties of polyester coatings were investigated. Hexa(methoxy-methyl)melamine (HMMM) and tetra (methoxymethyl)melamine (TMMM) were used as crosslinking agents for the polyester resin.
The process of the polyester/melamine system crosslinking was studied by sol-gel analysis and ATR-FTIR Spectroscopy. The castings with TMMM differed from the coatings with HMMM, the latter having improved hardness, MEK resistance and higher glass transition temperature. However, they were inferior in terms of elasticity and adhesion. The necessary balance of ail the above-men-tioned physical and mechanical properties was obtained for the films with the methoxy/ hydroxy-group ratio of 3,4 for HMMM and 2.3 for TMMM.
