Fluoropolymers satisfy such a demand. Fluoropolymers were developed by Du Pont and 3M about 60 years ago. Since then, they have been used in various fields due to the excellent properties derived from the unique molecular structure. However, the applications were limited, for example, the lubrication agents and non-stick coatings, because of difficulties of processing. In the case of coating applications they need a high temperature process to form a film.
Since the early 1980s, new means have been developed whereby a fluoropolymer can be used in a manner similar to a conventional coating resins. Recently, as a result of the developments the market has gradually expanded. Concurrently, there has been strong demand in the market to develop water-borne fluoropolymers for coatings.
On the other hand, inorganic polymers giving super durable coatings. The film obtained from the polymers show high durability and good resistance to dirt pick-up. However, a tendency to give small cracks in the film is observed during exposure.
In this paper, newly developed water-borne fluoropolymers will be discussed. Furthermore, a fluoropolymer hybridized with an inorganic compound will be discussed. The aim of this study is to obtain novel coatings with high durability and good resistance to dirt pick-up, especially the ability to shed dirt, without film defects.Note de contenu : - FLUORINE CHEMISTRY
