Résumé : |
With an annual consumption of around one million metric tons, synthetic iron oxides are the most important group of inorganic colour pigments. Although these products have already been used very successfully to colour a wide range of materials for many years, their colouring mechanism (causes of colouring) has not been described sufficiently to date. In the case of inorganic pigments, colouring is commonly produced by a combination of light absorption and diffusion in the visible spectral range. This publication offers a detailed description of colouring for red, yellow, orange and black iron oxides. It is explained using structural features of the respective iron oxides and findings from ligand field and molecular orbital theory (MO theory). The tests performed were carried out on phase-pure iron oxide pigments that are grouped together with selected properties in Table 1. |
