Produits de nourriture du cuirIndex. décimale : 675.2 Préparation du cuir naturel. Tannage Résumé : Leather artifacts are to be found in varied archaeological and historical places (museums, storages, libraries, excavation areas). Improper environmental conditions (such as relative humidity, temperature, excess light, pollution etc.) and poor handling can affect such artifacts and lead to their increased hardness and dryness. This study aims to evaluate castor oil and polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) as individual materials and as a mixture at different concentrations for the lubrication of vegetable-tanned leathers. Accelerated heat ageing at different temperatures was used.
The analytical techniques used for the evaluation process were digital light microscopy, scanning electron microscope (SEM), change of colour, attenuated total reflection - Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR), and mechanical properties (tensile strength and elongation). Investigation of the surface morphology by microscopy proved that a low concentration of castor oil in the mixture gave good fibre distribution and the grain surface pattern was established for the treated and aged treated samples. The colour value and total colour difference of the treated and aged treated samples with a low concentration of castor oil were better than at a high concentration. ATR-FTIR proved that the castor oil and PVP mixture protects leather from deterioration as no free radicals were observed in the spectra. Mechanical property values proved that the use of the lubricant protected leather from accelerated heat ageing. It is recommended that, a mixture of castor oil and PVP with a ratio of 10:90 could be applied for the lubrication of dry vegetable-tanned leather artifacts.Note de contenu : - MATERIALS AND METHODS : Materials - Methods

Systèmes d'injectionIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Stroke sensor measuring device and fully automatic injection device for two-component system - A stroke sensor measuring device which allows for indirect, contactless measurement of the paint flow has been developed as an extension to a multi-paint two-component system. Another extension provides fully automatic injection of the B-component. The two new systems help to achieve consistent accurate mixing ratios within tight tolerances. ViscositéIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : This paper describes a study of several model bimodal particle size distribution latex systems produced by blending large and small particle size anionically stabilised latices over a wide range of blend ratios. Minimum film forming temperature (MFT), drying rate and water uptake measurements were carried out. At a 80/20 weight ratio large/small particles, a minimum was observed in the MFT and also in the extent of water absorption of latex films with short drying times, although for films dried for longer periods, no such minimum in water absorption was observed. Drying profiles fit well with existing models, except for the 80/20 I/s blend which exhibits more complex drying behaviour. Low shear rate viscosity of selected blends was measured over a range of latex solids contents. The rheological data was fitted by the Krieger-Dougherty equation which was used to calculate the maximum volume packing fraction. An 80/20 blend (large/small) was found to exhibit a higher maximum volume fraction than that of either pure component of the blend, demonstrating the better packing achievable by blending. Finally several different application areas will be discussed. Mélanges (chimie)Index. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Fluorescence decay methods have been used extensively to characterize the formation of polymer films from latex dispersions, a process widely used in the coatings industry. By measuring the polymer chain diffusion at the nanometer scale, this technique enables the quantification of the amount of mixing between polymer particles that ultimately contributes to the formation of a polymer coating with good mechanical properties. This article provides an introduction to fluorescence decay methods, with a strong emphasis on their application to the characterization of latex film formation. Examples are also provided, demonstrating how this technique has been used to help in the understanding of this process in different latex coatings.
