Revêtements en phase aqueuse:Peinture en phase aqueuseIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Core–shell theory presents a new easy method to obtain high performance, economic, and eco-friendly anticorrosive mixed pigments. The core–shell pigments in this work are prepared by depositing a surface layer of an expensive efficient anticorrosive pigment (phosphates) on a bulk of less expensive extender pigment (alumina). The combination of these two compounds led to the production of new pigments with improved properties different from each of its individual components; and consequently these improved properties led to changing the efficiency of protection properties of paint films containing these new pigments. The new pigments were characterized using XRD, SEM, TEM, and EDAX analysis to elucidate their structure and prove the presence of phosphate ions on the surface of alumina. These pigments were also evaluated according to ASTM measurements. Then they were incorporated in three groups of emulsion paint formulations based on styrene acrylic emulsion copolymer, and comprising different concentrations of Zn, Mg, and 1Zn·1Mg phosphates/alumina core–shell pigments; in addition to a control formulation free of these pigments, to evaluate their efficiencies in anticorrosive paints for protection of cold-rolled steel. Chemical, physical, and mechanical measurements were carried out, besides corrosion resistance tests and weight loss of steel panels under paint films which were determined in 5% NaCl solution for 28 days. The results proved that the prepared formulations containing the prepared pigments could protect steel efficiently from corrosion compared to the control specimen. Groups II and III containing higher weight percentages of prepared pigments showed the best performance in corrosion protection, and the best performance among these two groups was paint films containing magnesium phosphate/alumina pigments. Revêtements organiquesIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : In this paper, the influence of different amounts of phosphoric acid on the protective properties of phosphorylated PVA (PPVA) coatings on a Mg AZ31 alloy is investigated. PPVA coatings and free-standing films were prepared by dip-coating and casting, respectively, and characterized by scanning electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and swelling assays. The anticorrosion properties of the coatings were investigated by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and potentiodynamic polarization, both in 3.5 wt% NaCl solution. The results show that |Z| values increase with the amount of H3PO4, reaching values on the order of 105 Ω cm2 for the coating with the highest amount of H3PO4 (0.100 PPVA). Additionally, this sample shows the lowest swelling degree (around 80%). Polarization tests demonstrate that all coatings significantly decrease jcorr (from 4.8 μA cm−2 to values around 0.3 μA cm−2) by means of a cathodic inhibition. These results make of PPVA coatings interesting water-based alternatives to polysaccharide coatings. SilanesIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Silane/TiO2 hybrid coatings were prepared on 304 stainless steel (304 SS) by a simple dipping method, where the silane is d-γ-methylacryloxy propyl trimethoxyl silane (CH2=C(CH3)COO(CH2)3Si(OCH3)3, MPMS). The photogenerated cathodic protection and invalidation of the hybrid coatings were evaluated by microstructure and electrochemical characterization. The coupling agent MPMS reduced the agglomeration of the nanosized TiO2 powders and promoted the adhesion of the coatings. Barrier protection of the coupled metal was promoted for the hybrid coatings in a short corrosion time. However, MPMS decreased the carrier concentration of the TiO2 electrode due to the large interface resistance. As a result, the corrosion potential shifted positively and the photogenerated cathodic protection decreased. In long-time corrosion, the hybrid coatings became invalid because of the accumulation of electropositive holes that may weaken the Ti–O bond and destroy the barrier effect. The single-coat application consists of a fixed 20 pigment volume concentration (PVC) anticorrosive bottom coat based on epoxy with a mixture of pigments like iron oxide, barytes, and zinc phosphate, and a fixed 10 PVC hydrophobic topcoat consisting of silicone resin and titanium dioxide pigment. Both the coatings were prepared separately in triple role and ball mill, respectively. Three different coating compositions were prepared by mixing silicone and epoxy coatings in different weight ratios (70:30, 80:20, and 90:10). Required amount of hardener, crosslinker, and catalyst were added to these prepared compositions separately prior to application and were thoroughly mixed and applied on mild steel and glass specimens. The prepared stratified coatings were named as STR-1, STR-2, and STR-3. The formation of self-stratification was confirmed by optical microscopy, FE-SEM, FTIR spectroscopy, and contact angle measurement. The coating systems were evaluated for adhesion, tensile strength, corrosion resistance, pseudobarnacle adhesion properties, and accumulation of foulant studies by immersion of test coupons in seawater. It is confirmed that there exists a most favorable stratified coating composition in terms of silicone and epoxy weight ratios which showed performance enhancement in terms of the hydrophobicity and foul release properties compared to other coating compositions.
