DSM’s Pentavitin ingredient has 'moisture-magnet' properties to alleviate these issues. As the responses to one of our recent global consumer surveys made clear, there is still a need for effective skin cleansers that also provide instant and long-lasting moisturisation after use. To address this unmet need, DSM has carried out some new studies with its hero ingredient Pentavitin®, a 100% natural, sustainably produced, moisturiser renowned for its moisturemagnet properties. Our findings from these studies show that common skin cleansing formulations containing Pentavitin immediately increase skin hydration for 24 hours, meaning an end to skin dryness post-cleansing or showering. These can be caused by decreased skin barrier function resulting from environmental factors. A strong skin barrier with high resilience is required to combat negative environmental influences like UV irradiation, air pollution or dry and cold climate conditions. These can lead to cutaneous inflammatory reactions. We recently demonstrated that plasmin activity was increased on sun-exposed facial stratum corneum. We also showed that the activities of proteases belonging to the plasminogen system, namely plasmin and urokinase, are elevated in facial stratum corneum and correlate with transepidermal water loss (TEWL) , which leads to a weakened skin barrier and dry skin. In order to help reduce dry skin caused by harsh environmental conditions we developed SYN-UPâ„¢ — a peptide-based specific dual inhibitor of urokinase and plasmin (INCI : Benzylsulfone-SerylHornophenylalanine Amidinobenzamide Acetate). It suppresses inflammatory reactions in vitro and strengthens the skin's barrier by improving cornified envelope maturation and normalizing desquamation. In a 28-day placebo-controlled human study we showed that SYN-UPâ„¢ was able to boost skin resilience and to lower TEWL. The skin condition improved, resisting the detrimental effects of persistent negative environmental influences mimicked by consecutive facial tape strippings. Moreover, expert grading and a self-assessment questionnaire showed that the skin was smoother and more hydrated.
