Résumé : |
Surface coatings are materials designed to protect and/or decorate the substrate to which they are applied. Over the years, surface coatings have contained substantial amounts of petrochemicals. Some petro-chemicals such as solvents are used directly in surface coating formulations, while others formed the feedstock for chemical processes which produce such raw materials as film formers and pigments.
The recognition that petroleum resources are not infinite makes it imperative to look for alternative sources of raw materials for surface coating materials. The vast quantites agricultural wastes in tropical countries could be a valuable source of raw materials for the surface coating industry. The purpose of this paper is to describe the nature and properties of such raw materials that could be derived from agricultural wastes of vegetable origin. |
