VoltampérométrieIndex. décimale : 667.3 Teinture et impression des tissus Résumé : Reactive dyes, such as Procion Yellow, Procion Red, and Procion Blue, were simultaneously determined in aqueous ternary solutions using derivative cathodic stripping voltammetry following adsorption on a hanging mercury drop electrode. An electrochemical cell containing Britton–Robinson buffer solution at pH 8 was used as the supporting electrolyte. The following experimental conditions were established: ?0.100 V deposition potential, 80 s deposition time, 50 mV pulse amplitude, 50 mV s?1 scan rate, and 0.40 mm2 maximum mercury drop size. A linear response was observed over the 0.630 × 10?3 to 1.050, 1.441 × 10?3 to 1.572, and 0.198 to 1.570 mg l?1 ranges for Procion Yellow, Procion Red, and Procion Blue respectively. The detection limits were 0.210 × 10?3, 0.480 × 10?3, and 0.066 mg l?1 respectively, with a relative standard deviation (n = 3) of 1.22%. The accuracy of the method was evaluated by derivative spectrophotometry, certifying the results as a function of proximity. All results were similar, indicating that derivative cathodic stripping voltammetry may be efficiently applied for the simultaneous determination of textile dyes in aqueous ternary solutions. Index. décimale : 667.3 Teinture et impression des tissus Résumé : Xanthophylls extracted from corn distillers’ dry grain were successfully applied to dye wool fabrics. As a readily available and cost-effective grain processing byproduct, corn distillers’ dry grain contains appreciable amounts of isolable xanthophyll colourants, which can potentially be used in textile coloration. However, the application of xanthophylls as textile colourants has been limited, possibly owing to their hydrophobic nature and lack of stability at higher temperatures. In the present work, dyeing of wool fabrics with xanthophyll dyes was performed in the presence of a solubilising agent (diglyme) and an antioxidant (butylated hydroxytoluene). Dyeing conditions were modelled and optimised by the one-factor-at-a-time method and response surface methodology. Depth of shade of the wool fabrics dyed with 0.33 g l?1 of xanthophylls could be as high as 10.9 ± 0.5, while the colour fastness to laundering and crocking was better than grade 4. The prominent effect of butylated hydroxytoluene on depth of shade (K/S) was further studied using functionally and structurally related model compounds. The K/S-enhancing ability of butylated hydroxytoluene was found to be a synergistic result of its antioxidising and complexing abilities. Lab-extracted xanthophylls of various purities were applied to wool fabrics using the optimised dyeing and aftertreatment conditions. Depth of shade but not colour fastness was significantly affected by the impurities in xanthophylls extracted from corn distillers’ dry grain. The strategy developed by this work not only extends the scope of xanthophyll application into textile coloration but also could be used for other hydrophobic and unstable natural colourants. SurfactantsIndex. décimale : 667.3 Teinture et impression des tissus Résumé : The solubilisation of hydrophobic azo dye Orange OT in aqueous/salt solution in several cationic surfactant micelles was studied using UV-vis spectroscopy. An attempt was made to correlate dye solubilising strength with adsorption/micellar characteristics. In our experiments we determined the change in solubilisation of hydrophobic dye when added to an aqueous solution of oppositely charged quaternary-salt-based cationic surfactants (conventional and gemini) and remarked on the probable location of the solubilised dye in the surfactant micelle. Results highlight the onset of dye solubilisation around the critical micelle concentration of each surfactant, which is influenced by the non-polar tail, spacer, and polar headgroup, while no dye could be solubilised at concentrations below the critical micelle concentration. Orange OT solubilised almost linearly with increase in surfactant concentration at and above the critical micelle concentration. The change in colour intensity of the dye (darker below the critical micelle concentration, lighter at and above the critical micelle concentration) could be attributed to dye–surfactant interactions. Further dye solubilisation was observed in the presence of salt. Note de contenu : - EXPERIMENTAL : Materials - Instrumentation - Method

In this study, succinic acid was firstly incorporated into cotton fabrics by esterification to the hydroxyl groups of cellulose, forming an anionic site for the dyes. The performance of the modified material was characterised by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and tensile strength. Results showed that the tensile strength of cotton fabrics was mostly retained after modification. The anthocyanin extracts from mulberry fruits were used to study the dyeability of the control and modified cotton fabrics. Red and deep purple (aubergine) are two main shades of cotton fabrics dyed with mulberry fruit extracts. Most importantly, aubergine shade is rare in cotton fabrics dyed with natural dyes. Modification with succinic acid clearly increased the colour strength of the dyed cotton fabric. The colour strength of dyed cotton fabric was improved from 2.7 to 5.3 in the case of dyeing without mordants, and from 3.2 to 6.9 in the case of dyeing with tin mordanting. Meanwhile, the colour fastness was improved by 0.5–2 grades with increasing succinic acid concentration in the finish solution. The colour fastness to perspiration, crocking, light, and washing of fabric dyed with simultaneous tin mordanting and modified with 30 g l?1 of succinic acid was found to be acceptable, with a grey scale grade of at least 3. As for home laundering, neutral soapy solution was more acceptable than alkaline soapy solution. Teinture -- Fibres textilesIndex. décimale : 667.3 Teinture et impression des tissus Résumé : Cationised cotton allows the dyeing of cotton fabrics without salt and up to 100% anionic dye utilisation. The employment of cationised cotton in the dyeing of high depths of shades with reactive dyes holds marked potential for sustainable improvements through less dye consumption, decreased water usage, and zero salt utilisation, all while obtaining shade depths darker than possible with conventional reactive dyeings. This work builds upon previous work in obtaining ultradeep dyeings of cotton utilising cationised and mercerised cotton by investigating the effects of liquor ratio in dyeing and amount of dye applied. Surprisingly, for mercerised only cotton fabric, it was found that nearly equivalent depths of shade, as indicated by L*, were obtained, irrespective of the liquor ratio and the amount of CI Reactive Black 5 applied from 7% to 10% owf. However, the strengths of the dyeings, indicated by the K/S sum, show slight increases with increasing amounts of dye, but not when the liquor ratio is lowered. Similarly, for mercerised-cationised cotton, the liquor ratio had a negligible effect on the depth of shade obtained, but increasing the amount of CI Reactive Black 5 resulted in an increase in shade depth and colour strength. Very deep shades with high colour strength were obtained with mercerised-cationised cotton that were not obtainable with uncationised cotton, even at a very low liquor ratio and with a drastic increase in the amount of CI Reactive Black 5. PhotochromismeIndex. décimale : 535.33 Instruments d'optique : classer à 681.4 Résumé : The principles, characteristics, and measurement methodology of photochromism of plastic ophthalmic lenses are briefly introduced and discussed. The factors influencing measurement variation and accuracy, including the preconditioning process, measurement device, and procedure, were investigated on ophthalmic photochromic lenses covering both photocasting and photocoating lens technologies. By design of experiment, factors affecting the measurements were studied using a photochromic measurement rig with reference to ISO 8980-3 requirements. Experimental results prove the necessity for a lens preconditioning process prior to measurement. The excitation light source in the photochromic measurement rig has the greatest impact on measurement variation from the device perspective, while lens temperature is the key environmental factor. On the basis of the investigation, recommendations are made for reducing measurement variations and improving result accuracy. Textiles et tissus -- Propriétés mécaniquesIndex. décimale : 667.3 Teinture et impression des tissus Résumé : The influence of grafting and grafting–curing of acrylic acid on the colour fastness of nylon-6 fabric dyed with an acid dye of low wash fastness was investigated. The variables involved in grafting were initially optimised for pristine nylon-6 fabric prior to grafting the same monomer onto the dyed fabrics. The highest graft yield achieved for the pristine and dyed nylon-6 fabrics was 44 and 14% respectively. Grey scale testing and colorimetric analysis revealed that the highest colour fastness and the smallest drop in colour strength belonged to the dyed–grafted–cured nylon-6 fabric. The colour components were measured, and the total colour difference of each sample after five washing cycles was computed. The specific colour difference showed that the implementation of either grafting or grafting–curing processes will alter the reference colour of the dyed fabric. The tensile strength of the grafted and grafted–cured fabrics was respectively 2.7 and 6.3% lower than that of dyed nylon-6. The results were compared with the standard conventional printing recipe containing synthetic thickener, and a favourable effect of Aloe vera introduction was achieved. The results show that the properties of the printed fabric (sharpness, colour yield, overall fastness properties, softness, and water vapour transmission) are dependent on the percentage of Aloe vera gel in the thickener combination, the concentration of printing auxiliaries, and the curing conditions. Optimal printing properties were achieved by using a printing paste containing 80% Aloe vera/20% sodium alginate (700 g kg?1), pigment (50 g kg?1), binder (145 g kg?1), fixer (10 g kg?1), and ammonium sulfate (5 g kg?1), followed by drying at 85 °C for 5 min and curing at 150 °C for 3 min. The sample printed with the new recipe showed superior rubbing fastness and handle properties, with a slightly lower colour yield, when compared with the sample printed with synthetic thickener. Finally, economic issues arising from synthetic thickener substitution are highlighted. Note de contenu : - Aloe vera percentage in thickener combination
