Skincare product formulators often turn to water-in-oil (W/O) emulsions when working with inorganic sunscreen actives because of their superior sun protection factor (SPF) efficiency per unit of active. Oil-in-water (O/W) formulations have tactile aesthetic advantages but are less SPF-efficient and present formulation issues with inorganic sunscreen actives, especially zinc oxide.
W/O formulations provide better SPF efficiency in part because of the more consistent film they apply to the hydrophobic skin surface. There are other advantages as well, including the fact W/O emulsions have a degree of inherent water resistance not seen in O/W emulsions that contain hydrophilic emulsifiers.Note de contenu : - Challenges of W/O formulations using mineral actives

- Fig. 1 : As UV light passes through the film of the sunscreen product on the skin, the porosity of the silica gels increases the pathlengthand causes it to scatter, promoting UV light reflection from the skin
- Fig. 2 : Silica gels are harder than plastic microbeads, so they retain their spherical shape and roll on easier, improving spreadibility on the skin

Note de contenu : - MATERIALS AND METHODS : Materials - Measuring absorptivity - Formulation preparation - Measuring transmittance from a 20-micron film - Imaging formulations - SEM images of fruit and vegetable formulations

Vieillissement cutané -- PréventionIndex. décimale : 668.5 Parfums et cosmétiques Résumé : Despite evidence linking even low levels of UV radiation to visible signs of skin ageing, and consumer concerns about the impact of sun exposure on the face, daily use of facial UV protection is rather on the lower side. One reason for this is a prevailing perception that sun protection is only necessary when on the beach or in other situations when wanting to avoid sunburn. Although UV filters do indeed protect the skin from sunburn, they also deliver a wider range of skin care benefits. To increase awareness of these, DSM has conducted a review of scientific studies into the role UV filters play in five areas: prevention of photo-ageing and hyperpigmentation, protection from blue light, reduction of skin cancer risk, and support for cutaneous immune function. We present a summary of the key topics here. Note de contenu : - UV FILTERS FOR FACIAL CARE - A MARKET WITH UNTAPPED POTENTIAL

Nanoparticles have shown a positive development due to its own various properties, functionalities and its applications in Cosmetics. One example where consumer expectations grow and the demand increases are UV protectors or sun creams. It was concluded that nanoparticles can be used in cosmetics like sunscreen to increase UV protection and prevent bacteria growth simultaneously. The available products are characterized by advantages and disadvantages of the various UV protection factors, and so far, no single material combines all desired properties. Nanotechnology shows an advantage character as it can be used to change the properties of the finely produced nanoparticles and influences products from various sectors as well as industries for a wide variety of applications, UV protection being amongst them.
