In this research, biomass raw materials (waste rice stalks) were solid fermented by inoculating with appropriate strains to produce itaconic acid products. The itaconic acid products and traditional leather chemicals were used respectively in leather processing. Two types of leather were tested, namely upper leather and split leather. The fullness and thickness of the finished leathers, also the COD (Chemical Oxygen Demand), BOD (Biochemical Oxygen Demand) and SS (suspended solids) of the residual liquids were tested and compared. The results show that the itaconic acid products could improve the fullness of the finished leather and more importantly could reduce the pollutants of the residual liquids thus enhancing environmental benefits. However, there is a certain subjective element affecting the final result. It would be valuable to set up a scientific theory and find a parameterized objective test method for leather handle character. In this paper, research results were analyzed to determine whether there was a interrelation between the handle character (softness, fullness and elasticity) and mechanical parameters measured at specific technical states.
Softness can be characterized by bending coefficient (Kb) ; fullness can be characterized by compression index (Kc); stretchability by lastometer coefficient (K1) and elasticity by bending stress relaxation attenuation constant (αb) and bending stress attenuation (K). The statistical method of discriminatory two class analysis (DATC) was there adopted to characterize the handle of leather. The corresponding experiment and the application of DATC in the evaluation of leather handle character was carried out and the DATC results were found to be significant at a level greater than 99%. The findings indicate that the DATC method can be regarded as a comprehensive analysis method to, objectively and correctly, characterize the handle of leather.Note de contenu : - Interrelated research : Compressibility of leather - Bending property of leather - Lastometer property of leather

Matériau pleinIndex. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : Although entitled "The Determination of Some Physical Properties", this paper deals mainly with the determination of one particular physical property, namely the "fullness".
This property is best defined in a negative way in that in a full leather there is an absence of intrinsic stiffness. The fullness of a leather sample is the inverse of the bending modulus.
The important word in this definition is intrinsic. A manual assessment of the softness of a leather sample is affected not only by the intrinsic stiffness of the fibre weave, but by the thickness of the leather and by other factors. It is important to the tanner to be able to determine the intrinsic stiffness of the leather.
This property of fullness we determine on the Pierce Flexometer. This apparatus was originally used by Pierce' to determine the properties of textiles but was subsequently adapted by Conabere2 of the B.L.M.R.A. to the determi¬nation of leather properties. The experimental work used in this paper was carried out by Lee and Whitton using a version of the Pierce Flexometer.
For this paper I have taken as illustrations of the usefulness of fullness determinations, two investigations made in our laboratories, the first concerning the production of a white leather of suitable properties, the second the selection of the best blend of synthetic and vegetable materials for retanning chromed stock. In these experiments, mixtures of two tanning materials were used and the properties of the different leathers obtained from the different tanning mixtures were related to the composition of the mixtures used. Using this method a tanner can find the mixture of tanning materials which will give him the desired characteristics in his leather or, as is more usual, the best compromise in characteristics.En ligne : https://drive.google.com/file/d/1fshmpz7mPIq9vp6fr0ip7KoE_MWpuaRi/view?usp=drive [...] Format de la ressource électronique : Permalink : https://e-campus.itech.fr/pmb/opac_css/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=37023

We have studied the principle and method of testing leather fullness and softness by compression and Lastometer type experiments. A variety of Lastometer apparatus for testing softness had been designed and manufactured. Some parameters, such as compression/decompression and fullness work, have been calculated using the experimental data. The results are coincident with those of HEM (hand evaluation method). This testing procedure appears to be reliable for measuring leather fullness and softness. Note de contenu : - PRINCIPLE
