It is one of the most frequent reasons for appointments with dermatologists (20% of consultations). Acne of teenagers normally disappears around the age of 20 but the symptoms can continue into adulthood.
To tackle this pathology, SILAB developed ACNESIUM®, a purified natural active ingredient obtained from the pericarps of pomegranate (Punica granatum), able to prevent the clinical signs of slight to moderate acne in adults.

Teinture -- Fibres textilesIndex. décimale : 667.2 Colorants et pigments Résumé : This paper reports the optimal ultrasonic-assisted extraction (UAE) conditions for the maximum recovery of natural dyes from pomegranate rind using response surface methodology. The optimum UAE conditions were found to be an extraction time of 60 minutes, an extraction temperature of 65°C, a water to material ratio of 19 mL/g and an ultrasonic power of 132 W. The yield of the extracted pomegranate rind dyes (PRD) under optimum conditions was 17.1% ± 0.1%, which closely agrees with the predicted value of 17.2%. Fourier Transform–infrared and ultraviolet-visible absorption spectroscopy indicated that there were no significant structural changes in the PRD under optimal UAE conditions. The PRD particle size was clearly reduced, and the distribution was more uniform under the action of the ultrasonic waves. The total anti-oxidant activity of the PRD was analysed using DPPH• assay, and the results indicated that a proper and reasonable ultrasonic-assisted treatment can enhance the anti-oxidant capacity of the pomegranate rind natural dyes. Furthermore, in comparison with Staphylococcus aureus using the Agar plate method, the anti-bacterial activity indicated that the fabrics dyed with PRD under UAE conditions displayed outstanding anti-bacterial activity. Teinture -- Fibres textilesIndex. décimale : 667.3 Teinture et impression des tissus Résumé : This paper presents the application of conventional potassium aluminium sulphate wool mordanting and a biochemical method with silver nitrate (as antimicrobial agent and mordant), alone and in combination with oxygen plasma, as part of comprehensive research into pretreatment processes for wool dyeing with natural extract from pomegranate peel (Punica granatum L.) . Pretreatment with oxygen plasma significantly improved the hydrophilicity and tensile strength of all tested samples and showed that oxygen plasma can improve K/S , washing fastness, and even replace certain mordants in wool dyeing with natural pomegranate dye. All dyed samples exhibited good antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus , which can be contributed to the phenol content in pomegranate dye. Only after 28 days of intensive ageing in natural weathering conditions did K/S and antibacterial activity against Klebsiella pneumoniae slightly decrease in dyed samples pretreated with oxygen plasma. In this study, pomegranate peels which are well known with high polyphenolic content were evaluated as a potential source of tanning agent for leather industry. For this purpose, firstly pomegranate peels were extracted in Koch extractor at 70°C for 8 hours. In order to determine the tanning ability, 30% of ground pomegranate peel powder (containing 7.2% of active tannin matter) was used in the tanning process and pomegranate peel tanned leather was evaluated in terms of increases in thickness and shrinkage temperature, color change and mechanical properties. The application of pomegranate peel tannin in the tanning process provided that an acceptable shrinkage temperature (68.5°C) and mechanical properties for vegetable tanned leathers. The results revealed that the tannin obtained from pomegranate peel has a remarkable tanning effect and can be used in the tanning process. Thus, it is concluded that pomegranate peels can be evaluated as a new source of tannin for leather industry. Note de contenu : - MATERIALS

RetannageIndex. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : Although Cr(VI) is not used in any step of the manufacturing process, the entity of Cr(VI) in leather and leather products has become a concern in the leather industry. Formation of free radicals may bring about conditions for the oxidation of free Cr(III) (if exists in leather) to Cr(VI) and these oxidations are usually catalyzed by heat and UV radiation. Antioxidants have an important role in order to inhibit oxidant compound activity by donating an electron to compounds. There are many studies on the prevention of Cr(VI) formation in leather production. The inhibiting properties of Cr(VI) formation were usually investigated by using commercial vegetable tannins (polyphenols) together with other retanning agents in retanning process. However, no study has been conducted on the possible use of pomegranate peel tannins as an alternative retanning agent, which is known as an important source of antioxidants, in leather making and their ability to prevent Cr(VI) formation. In the present study, pomegranate peels were extracted in different solvents and total phenolic content and antioxidant power of the extracts were determined by Folin-Ciocalteu, FRAP (The Ferric Reducing Ability of Plasma) and TEAC/ABTS (Trolox-Equivalent Antioxidant Capacity/2,2’-azinobis-(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid)) methods. Furthermore, different amounts of pomegranate peel extracts were used in retanning processes and the leathers were investigated in terms of increases in thickness, color changes as well as effect on prevention of Cr(VI) formation. The results revealed that besides noticeable retanning performance, pomegranate peel extract has a spectacular effect on prevention of Cr(VI) formation as compatible with its antioxidant power.
