However, the ageing of such a device must be investigated before any application. Therefore, our investigations focus on the ageing of the components of a polycarbonate based electrochromic device. The optical, electrical, mechanical and electrochemical properties of the ion storage layer as well as the substrate will be assessed after storage in a climate with a high humidity and high temperature level. RhéologieIndex. décimale : 668.4 Plastiques, vinyles Résumé : Experimental results, which have mostly been obtained with the aid of flow birefringence, are quoted. For a series of polystyrenes insights are obtained into the adjustment times for steady flow. For shear rates of practical interest these times are extremely short compared with the times showing up in the relaxation time spectrum. The question arises, whether this spectrum can still be of influence. Measurements on polyethylenes are quoted, which are in agreement. But this means that, fortunately, in capillary rheometry mostly the steady state viscosity is measured. This statement also holds for duct flow, which has often been used for the investigation of shear induced crystallization, in particular on polypropylenes. The linear stress optical rule is recalled. It reflects the persistence of an internal equilibrium, which breaks down only at high enough shear rates. This equilibrium seems to hold for the random flight statistics of chain segments connecting entanglements. The mentioned adjustment times are already short, before the said break down occurs. TransportIndex. décimale : 668.4 Plastiques, vinyles Résumé : The helical grooved barrel feed section permits, when the barrel channel aspect ratio and the barrel channel helical angle are properly designed, an operating mode where the positive conveying is prevailing. While the pellet size of materials is varied, different dimension relationships of the barrel channel depth and pellet size could induce different equivalent barrel channel aspect ratios with the transformation of solids conveying mechanisms from the positive conveying to the frictiondrag conveying. Considering the effect of dimension relationships on the solids conveying mechanism, a novel pelletsize physical model was established to guide the available design of the barrel channel geometry for positive conveying. In the pellet-size model, one or two shear interfaces were identified inside the solid-plug resulting in different equivalent barrel channel aspect ratios, based on which the solids conveying mechanism on the shear interfaces was detailed by the boundary condition equations for positive conveying. Besides, the theoretical simulations are also compared with the on-line measuring experimental data. The results show that the equivalent barrel channel aspect ratio on the shear interfaces exists indeed and determines the solids conveying mechanism, which is well confirmed by the excellent consistence between the predicted and measured data. ViscoélasticitéIndex. décimale : 668.4 Plastiques, vinyles Résumé : Numerical simulations of co-extruded multilayered viscoelastic polymers flowing through a feed block were performed to analyze the effects of polymer rheology and process conditions on the distortion of interfaces between layers. Finite element simulations assuming Phan-Thien Tanner viscoelastic fluids were used to test the effects of increasing the number of layers introduced to the feed block and decreasing wall friction on interface distortion. It was found that increasing the number of layers introduced to the feed block decreased the overall distortion in the layers by reducing the overall magnitude of second normal stress differences and thus decreasing the normal in-plane velocities that cause distortion, which was validated by experiments. Decreasing wall friction was also found to decrease the amount of distortion in layer interfaces by decreasing the strength of these second normal stress differences. PolyéthersulfonesIndex. décimale : 668.9 Polymères Résumé : In this study poly(ether sulphone) (PES) asymmetric membranes and Polyamide (PA) composite membranes were used for gas separation at low pressures. The effect of PES concentration, contact time of sebacoyldichloride, addition of 1,6-hexaethylene diamine solution and PA active layer on the structures of PES support layer were studied. Changing the structure of PES membrane from channel-like to sponge form increased the selectivity in the gas separation process. However, this structural variation caused a considerable decline in gas permeability. The characteristics of top layer depend on the porosity and compactness of sub-layers structure. Active layer formation on the surface of support structure at PES concentrations of more than 25 %wt improved the oxygen selectivity considerably. The optimum conditions for preparation of PA active layer through interfacial polymerization process were elucidated in this paper. The PA composite membrane prepared at the PES concentration of 25 wt% and monomer concentration of 1 wt% provided the highest selectivity for oxygen enrichment process. Matières plastiques -- ExtrusionIndex. décimale : 668.4 Plastiques, vinyles Résumé : The influence of the feed opening axis width and position in relation to the plasticizing system axis on the effectiveness of the extrusion process of poly(vinyl) chloride has been studied. The research was conducted on the extrusion line for profiles with the extruder of the screw diameter 25 mm and L/D ratio = 25. In the extruder, the extruder head was mounted with a die of a rectangular cross-section shape for extruding a sheet of a defined width and thickness. The extruder was adapted for mounting five feed segments in the feed zone of the plasticizing unit; the segments differed from one another in terms of their feed opening width, the values of which were 0.6 D, 0.7 D, 0.8 D, 0.9 D and 1.0 D, respectively, whereas the values of the longitudinal axis shift of the opening relative to the longitudinal axis of the plasticizing unit were 0.2 D, 0.15 D, 0.10 D, 0.05 D and 0.0 D, respectively, which corresponded to 5 mm, 3.75 mm, 2.5 mm, 1.25 mm and 0 mm, respectively. The effectiveness of the polyvinyl chloride extrusion process was determined by dependences of extrudate temperature, extruder screw torque, polymer mass flow rate, power supplied to the extruder and conveyed by the polymer, unit energy consumption and energy efficiency of the extrusion process on the feed opening width and its axis position relative to the plasticizing unit axis, at different values of the screw rotational speed. It was stated that the width and position of the feed opening in relation to the plasticizing system axis can be adjusted in such a way that the extrusion process will be the most effective and other conclusions were also drawn. Soudage laserIndex. décimale : 668.4 Plastiques, vinyles Résumé : This article describes the correlation between crystallinity degree and spatial seam homogeneity for laser transmission welding of polymers applying TWIST method, which is based on a superposition of slow regular feed and fast periodic circular or elliptical beam motion. Laser welding experiments and measurements of optical polymer properties (transmittance, reflectance and collimated transmittance) are reported for thermoplastic polypropylene PP and Polyamide PA66 as well as for thermoplastic elastomer PEBAX. The shape of the seam is visualized by measuring the heat affected zone (HAZ). Compared to the circular the elliptical motion leads to a homogeneous HAZ, which is advantageous for the welding process in many cases. Besides TWIST parameters, scattering of the laser radiation influences the welding result considerably. This is shown for high-crystallinity PA66, which needs more laser power to achieve similar weld seams than PP or PEBAX. The correspondence between homogeneous HAZ and good welding results is investigated by measuring the strength of welded T-shape samples with respect to the laser power. The elliptic TWIST motion leads to a broader processing window, if the ratio of the beam diameter and the major TWIST radius is smaller than a certain value (< 1/2). For PEBAX, a local maximum of strength-vs.-power curve is obtained for all TWIST® radii. For welding PP, the maximum is observed only for big radii. Traction (mécanique)Index. décimale : 668.4 Plastiques, vinyles Résumé : The effects of process conditions on fibrillation and mechanical properties of polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) paste extrudates have been studied using capillary rheometers having barrels of different diameter and equipped with capillary dies of various designs. The tensile strength of PTFE extrudates is measured as a function of apparent shear rate (flow rate), reduction ratio (cross sectional area of barrel to that of die), contraction angle, and diameter of the barrel. To describe the effects of die design on the quality of the final product, a basic phenomenological mathematical model has been developed. The model consists of a simple equation that explains fibril formation, due to the compression of PTFE resins, plus a kinetic equation, which is coupled with the "radial-flow" hypothesis to predict the structure and the tensile strength of extrudates. The model predictions are found to be consistent with tensile strength measurements and SEM micrographs of the PTFE extrudates. Note de contenu : - EXPERIMENTAL : Materials - Methods

In this work a method for modifying the flow pattern in the weld line zone using a "flow disruptor" is proposed to strengthen the weld lines of fiber reinforced polypropylene. The flow disruptor is a small insert introduced inside the injection molding cavity, in the weld line area, and its objective is to mix the melt and disrupt fountain flow in order to blur and erase the weld line. The method is simple and low cost, does not require special machines or molds and does not affect the part shape or surface. Flow disruptors were designed, their effects analyzed by using simulation software, fabricated from different materials and encapsulated within injection molded tensile test samples for mechanical properties evaluation. The results of this work demonstrate that the mechanical properties in the weld line can be improved by the use of a well designed flow disruptor, made from suitable materials. Using water as an intermediate medium, a stable dispersion of pristine clay in ethylene glycol was achieved. However, after polymerization, no significant gain was obtained in terms of delamination of silicate platelets. The polycondensation reaction when using Cloisite 30B was carried out at a temperature as low as 250 °C in order to retain a considerable portion of the organo-modifier. The results showed that Cloisite 30B was successfully intercalated by the polymer chains, resulting in a d-spacing increase from 1.9 nm to about 3.6 nm. Although some mono and double silicate layers were observed in microscopy images, the major part of the organoclay remained in a tactoid intercalated form. Sampling during the polycondensation reaction revealed that, in this process, clay was first swelled efficiently by the monomer, and this structure was preserved in the early stage of polycondensation. However, the silicate platelets collapsed with time as the polycondensation progressed and larger molecular weight oligomers were formed. An investigation on the type of impeller used in the polymerization process showed that a slight improvement was achieved in terms of aggregate size and distribution when the anchor impeller was replaced by a helical one.

To realize the accurate replication of bioscaled shark skin, swelling ratio and swelling rate in gaseous n-Hexane are investigated. The accuracy of bio-scaling processing approach is verified by comparison between microstructure of original and amplified shark skin, which shows that the swelling ratio can reach even to 34 %, and the bioscaling processing accuracy is higher than 95 %. In addition, both the water contact angle and the optimal velocity range of drag reduction will change with the amplification. Note de contenu : - Swelling ratio and rate control of PDMS
