Tackifiant (adhésifs)Index. décimale : 668.3 Adhésifs et produits semblables Résumé : Curing, crosslinking and vulcanization are all terms used to describe the process of forming chemical bonds between polymer chains in order to alter the properties of the polymer. In rubber compounds crosslinking allows the article being produced to hold its shape and imparts the desired degree of strength and durability to the final product. The actual properties obtained are directly related to the number and the type of bonds formed per unit volume of elastomer. Crosslinking is also often employed in the manufacture of pressure sensitive adhesives to increase shear adhesion, cohesive strength and resistance to elevated temperatures and solvents.
The curing of various elastomers by a variety of techniques is generally well understood. There is, however, a dearth of information in the literature on the crosslinking of pressure sensitive adhesives. Also, pressure sensitive adhesive systems employ large amounts of tackifiers and plasticizers, and the effect of these ingredients on the cure mechanism and the final properties is virtually unknown. This paper will examine the role of tackifiers in cured pressure sensitive adhesives and suggest some analytical approaches that can help ensure tackifier uniformity and adhesive quality and performance.Note de contenu : - Adhesive curing systems

Tack à la boucle (test)Index. décimale : 668.3 Adhésifs et produits semblables Résumé : The experimental data and theory presented in this paper demonstrate that the AAT can generate much more information than the traditional probe tests. It provides information related to adhesive peel, loop tack and shear performance. It furnishes information related to adhesive molecular structure. In summary, the key advantages of AAT over the traditional tests are:
- Multiple adhesive performance data can be obtained with a single test.
- Adhesive properties can be tested where the influence of the facestock is minimized.
- Only a small adhesive sample size, i.e., 1 cmx2 cm, is needed for testing.
- The AAT profile reflects the molecular structure of the adhesive.Note de contenu : - EXPERIMENTAL : Mechanical design of the AAT - Test conditions - Samples

This part covers the feasibility of UV curable PSA tape manufacture. The first part, which ran in the July issue, covered the fundamentals of PSA formulating and alternative processes for manufacturing PSAs.
Given the market interest in the lower capital cost UV curing process and the accessibility of a toll converting line with UV curing units on it, the UV prototype formulation based on low molecular weight polyisoprene was scaled up to near production quantities under a project cofunded by the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority. The lack of a suitably configured electron beam pilot facility within the United States precluded any scale-up work to demonstrate this alternative. The objective of this UV project was to produce prototype rolls of pressure sensitive tape made with commercial backing materials.Note de contenu : - TAPE MANUFACTURE - UV curable PSA feasibility

Résistance au blanchimentIndex. décimale : 668.3 Adhésifs et produits semblables Résumé : The new Rohm and Haas technology moves into the realm of solvents and allows emulsions to compete for business in some application areas previously considered too demanding for an emulsion. These types of applications involve processes, such as pasteurization, that expose the pressure sensitive article to high heat and humidity or hot water for extended periods of time. Our new technology allows us to undergo processes of this type with little or, in most cases, no whitening. Note de contenu : - Test methodology
