Morphologie (matériaux)Index. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : Collagen fibre bundles, which are the structural components of skin and leather, are organized in a variety of ways. Each species of animal has a characteristic arrangement, although in many cases they are similar. In animals which are commonly used for leather production, such as cattle and sheep, the arrangement of the fibre bundles has been well studied, and the existence of a relationship between the fibre bundle orientation and the physical properties of the leather is recognized. Diseases of the collagen may also have a profound effect on skin strenth. The strength of leather depends therefore on the arrangement of the collagen fibre bundles and, presumably also on the strength of the collagen itself.
Although kangaroo leather has not been studied to the same extent as the more commonly used leathers, recent studies on its physical properties and stratigraphic strength analysis have shown that there are differences between kangaroo and other leathers. To ensure that full use may be made of its capabilities, a better understanding of its structure is needed. This paper reports a histological study of kangaroo leather and compares it with bovine leather.En ligne : https://drive.google.com/file/d/1DG1ODE2PPey865TN7K87_gDWewPiwa55/view?usp=drive [...] Format de la ressource électronique : Permalink : https://e-campus.itech.fr/pmb/opac_css/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=8994

Transparence (optique)Index. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : A new and versatile method of observing transparent polymeric impregnants within the leather structure using light microscopy is described. The method involves matching the refractive indices of the leather fibres and mounting medium then observing by dark field, phase contrast or modulation contrast microscopy. Methods of optimising the viewing conditions are described and the usefulness of the procedure is demonstrated. Titre : A simple method of assessing the grain treatment of finished leather Type de document : texte imprimé Auteurs : J. H. Bavinton, Auteur ; D. E. Peters, Auteur Année de publication : 1982 Article en page(s) : p. 485-489 Note générale : Bibliogr. Langues : Américain (ame) Index. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : There is a continuing need to know whether a piece of finished leather is full grain or corrected grain, or has been printed. Microscopic examination of cross sections or cut edges, or of the surface of a piece of leather in question is not always helpful in detecting buffing of the grain or printing. It is difficult and time-consuming to extract reliable information on the condition of the grain surface from cross sections of the leather and, in any case, a cross section represents an extremely small sample of the surface under examination.
Because most finishes are applied with the aim of altering the appearance of the existing leather grain surface, examination of the finished surface under a stereo microscope or hand lens may not be informative. Satisfactory illumination is difficult because the uneven and often glossy surface of the finish produces reflections, shadows and glare which obscure important features. In some cases wehave found it virtually impossible to obtain information about the leather surface by using either light or scanning electron microscopy.
While considering the problems involved in deciding that treatments had been applied to the grain surface, we realized that more information would be obtained if a method of removing the finish were readily available. Many of the polymeric components of a finish are applied in organic solvents and most of them remainsoluble in these solvents. Thus we observed that application of one or more organic solvents to the leather finish usually removed enough of the finish to allow us to examine the underlying grain surface.En ligne : https://drive.google.com/file/d/1qZpWs6a_5v_U6OMAZvfcdIU9ac6HdJr-/view?usp=share [...] Format de la ressource électronique : Permalink : https://e-campus.itech.fr/pmb/opac_css/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=17491

Peaux brutes -- StructureIndex. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : The cause of the vertical fibre hide structure and the factors influencing its prevalence were studied in 362 Hereford cattle. The condition wasdiagnosed in 83 (22,9 %) cattle and was not affected by the sex of the animal, the year and season of its birth, gestation period, birthweight, or the presence or absence of horns, nor by the age, parity and weight of the dam. Significant differences in the frequency of the condition were found in animals grouped according to their sires or dams and evidence was obtained that the condition was due to the presence, in a homozygous state, of an autosomal recessive gene. StatistiqueIndex. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : Previous workers have identified two types of fibre architecture in hides from hereford cattle which result in weak leather. The two types were called vertical fibre and the intermediate form of vertical fibre and they were considered to be forms of the same condition. In this study it is shown that the two forms (here referred to as vertical fibre and high weave) are clearly separable by microscopy of fresh hides but with more difficulty in the case of split leather. Also, vertical fibre and high weave have a different incidence depending upon the breed of the animal. It is suggested that whereas vertical fibre is a specific condition, high weave is probably a form of the normal weave. Thus it is concluded that vertical fibre and high weave are independent although similar structural forms and they both produce weak leather.
