Traffic control devices are important and effective tools to achieve the goals of traffic management. Road markings are one of such important traffic control devices, which have widely been used all over the world. The short service life of conventional road marking paints (in use in India) require frequent repainting which lead to disruption of traffic and escalation in the maintenance cost. Thus a need was felt to develop indigenously durable and cost effective substitute to the conventional road marking paint. Out of 100 test formulations of various binders, aggregates, fillers and glass beads 10 formulations were selected for first field trial on Mathura Road, New Delhi. The road surface characteristics were evaluated before application. The formulations of promising marking materials were laid at application temperature range of 200°-220°C at a uniform thickness of 3mm, using screed box developed at Central Road Research Institute. After initial field trials on Mathura Road, New Delhi three successful formulations were subjected to exhaustive field trials at other sites in Delhi, Pune and Bombay. Various physical and chemical properties of successful formulations were evaluated to ascertain useful service life of the markings under different traffic and climatic conditions. The service cost of successful thermoplastic formulations varied from 2. 74 paise to 3.68 paise per day useful service life against 5. 92 paise per day useful service life for conventional road marking paints. The recommended formulation with and without glass beads was respectively found to be 1.7 and 2.2 times cheaper than the conventional road marking paint, with a service life of at least 3 years. It is also the most significant factor for determination of the mechanical properties like hardness and flexibility. Recently eco-friendly norms have driven formulators towards high solid coatings which have the additional advantage of the low energy requirement. This demands a resin of low molecular weight for having a higher application solid at a sprayable viscosity. These would however create a problem for thermosetting acrylics because with decrease in molecular weight the probability of functional group(s) required for cross linking per oligomer chains is being reduced. The author of the present paper has ensured that each oligomer chain would have at least one functional group by using new chain transfer agent. The objectives were met by using chain transfer agent which itself had the functional group. A series of experiments were conducted after preparing high solid acrylic oligomers with different monomers and 2- mercapto ethanol as chain transfer agent to check for its effectiveness as molecular weight modifier and molecular weight distribution modifier. The oligomers were also evaluated in coatings with melamine resin to check the gasoline resistance property and flexibility. The author has established conclusively that it is possible to improve both the properties simultaneously using the technique discussed. Note de contenu : - RESIN SYNTHESIS

But to maintain this beauty and protect it, is indeed a very difficult task. The problem of defacing the structure by graffiti artists is increasing and to make a paint which resist graffiti without any alteration in original appearance of the structure is the dream of paint industry all over the world. This paper reviews the development of anti-graffiti coatings and the new trends that are emerging. Note de contenu : - GRAFFITI
