(Dorland, 28th ed.).Index. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : This article describes the preparation of thymol-doped acrylic resins by photopolymerization of solutions of thymol in tripropylenglycoldiacrylic monomer. This provides an easy, energy-saving, and environmental friendly process to prepare antibacterial plastics (fulfilling most of the “green chemistry” requirements). The results demonstrate that thymol can be included in the resin even at high concentration (up to 28.6%) without affecting the photocuring reaction and losing transparency. The glass transition temperature of the doped resin decreases when the thymol content increases, as it behaves like a plasticizer with respect to the acrylic resin. As indicated by HPLC analysis, thymol can be released in liquid media at a rate that depends on the chemical nature of the liquid. Evaluation by agar diffusion assays showed an antibacterial activity on both Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria (Staphylococcus aureus, Listeria monocytogenes, and Escherichia coli). The antibacterial activity can occur just on the plastic surface when the thymol-doped resins is applied as thin coating, while it is evident also in the surrounding agar medium for doped plastic discs, 1.2 mm thick with a concentration of thymol in the resin higher than 16.7%.
Sol-gel, ProcédéIndex. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : Synthesis of silica sol-gel nanoparticles was carried out by the Stober’s process and the resulting products were used in leather finishing mixtures as a coating ingredient. The physical and chemical properties of the synthesized sol-gel nanoparticles were characterized by TEM, FE-SEM, EDAX, FT-IR, TGA and XRD. The surface morphology of the nanoparticle coated leathers were evaluated by AFM. The silica sol-gel nanoparticles-coated leather exhibited improved water spotting resistance, water vapor permeability, and increased adhesion values. Therefore, a conventional system of leather finishing has been upgraded by using silica sol-gel nanoparticles, especially in the base coat application. Index. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Graphene oxide (GO) was modified by 3-methacryloxypropyltrimethoxysilane (MPS) to obtain modified graphene oxide (MGO). MGO was dispersed in urushiol-formaldehyde polymer by mechanical mixing and ultrasonic dispersion, and MGO/urushiol-formaldehyde polymer (UFP) coatings with different MGO contents were fabricated. The microstructure, physico-mechanical properties, and electrochemical properties of the MGO/UFP composite coatings were investigated. The results indicated that the hardness, adhesion, and corrosion resistance of the MGO/UFP composite coatings were obviously enhanced compared with the pure UFP coatings. The hardness and the adhesion grade of the MGO/UFP composite coatings with 3.5 wt% MGO (GO, 1.5 wt%, and MPS, 2.0 wt%) reached 6H and 2, respectively. Additionally, GO connected with MPS by chemical bond and the well-dispersed MGO in UFP could significantly enhance the anticorrosion performance of the UFP coatings, which could result from bending the diffusion pathway of penetrant species in the UFP coating matrix.
