Résumé : |
Rheological additives are one of the most important groups of additives used in aqueous coatings systems. Of the more recent developments in this field, polyurethane-based thickeners are becoming increasingly important as they provide a number of advantages over conventional thickeners such as cellulose or polyacrylic acid esters. PU thickeners consist of hydrophilic and (usually terminal) hydrophobic segments. This paper uses a number of practical examples to demonstrate the function of polyurethane thickeners and discusses the various factors which influence their effect in coatings. Particular attention is given to the influence of the solids content, solvents, surfactants and temperature. |
