However, matt latex paints tend to show poor stain resistance since they develop highly porous and rough surfaces. In recent years, matt latex paints have been improved in their stain resistance with resulting better cleanability, by adding hydrocarbon acrylic polymers and fluorine-containing compounds. In this work, we prepared fluorinated acrylic emulsions of the copolymer of butyl acrylate (BA) and perfluorobutylethylene (PFBE), which were introduced in latex paint compositions. The properties of the modified paints were evaluated by performing stain resistance tests with several domestic products. It was observed that they had good stain release properties, thus conferring good properties to the final painting system. They contain the self-cleaning behavior typical of fluorinated coatings, which have been proven by the decrease of their surface energies. Since the cleaning procedures of a matt paint film can also impart some gloss increase, the wet and dry burnishes were also evaluated. The results have shown improvements in stain resistance and cleanability of the modified matt latex paints with the maintenance of their stability and the coatings gloss as required. Both resins have been successfully used as sole binders in decorative paints. A 55% PVC white paint formulation was used to assess the resins' behaviour in moderately high binder content coatings. Paint properties were generally in agreement with standard Vam/VeoVa and acrylic latex binders for interior applications, white for exterior applications further improvements are still needed.
A specific interior matte paint formulation was developed to meet the European Ecolabel criteria. In addition to a high quality acrylic latex, both renewable resins were able to produce paints whose properties are in compliance with Ecolabel parameters.
The presented resins are, thus, excellent choices to increase the bio-based content of a decorative paint.
Further characterisation is being carried out and different formulations are being tested in order to explore the possibilities of these novel renewable resins.Note de contenu : - Renewable resin as co-binder

Traîtements de surfaceIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : An acrylic fatty acid derivative (AcFAD) was evaluated as comonomer for promotion of oxidative cure in waterborne latexes. AcFAD was polymerized by solvent homopolymerization and copolymerization and by emulsion copolymerization, and the final products characterized. In the two polymerization processes, NMR analyses confirmed that the reaction occurred involving both the terminal acrylic double bond and the conjugated double bonds of the aliphatic chain. Compared with a reference acrylic latex, the results obtained after AcFAD incorporation showed a time-dependent increase in gel content and in solvent resistance of dry films. These were ascribed to oxidative cure and consequent self-crosslinking of the acrylic polymer, involving the conjugated double bonds in AcFAD side chains. Oxidative cure was also confirmed by FTIR analyses. In addition, reduction in minimum film-forming temperature evidenced that AcFAD has an internal plasticization effect during film formation. Incorporation of this comonomer in acrylic paint binder formulations constitutes a promising alternative to the use of volatile coalescing agents. Note de contenu : - EXPERIMENTAL : 1. Materials
