Knowledge versus risk (Part 2) / Roger Dietrich in EUROPEAN COATINGS JOURNAL (ECJ), N° 07-08/2009 (07-08/2009)
[article]
Titre : Knowledge versus risk (Part 2) : Identifying paint contaminants and their contribution to coating failures Type de document : texte imprimé Auteurs : Roger Dietrich, Auteur Année de publication : 2009 Article en page(s) : p. 34-37 Langues : Anglais (eng) Catégories : Revêtements -- Défauts:Peinture -- Défauts
Surfaces -- AnalyseIndex. décimale : 667.6 Peintures Résumé : An evaluation of data on paint failures showed that only 16 % could be attributed directly to poor paint quality. Common problems and some methods of identifying precisely the nature of unexpected materials in paint samples and applied paint films are discussed. It is shown how precise identification can help to find the causes of application failures. Revêtements en bâtiment:Peinture en bâtimentIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Façade paint can leach when water condenses on freshly dried painted walls, leaving behind shiny vertical "snail trails" that alter and deteriorate the façade's appearance. To date, predicting a paint formulation's tendency towards leaching is difficult, because the phenomenon is poorly understood, and no standardised analytical methods exist. A newly-developed test method can mimic leaching conditions and help in studying the influence of paint ingredients on the occurrence of snail trails. In addiction, we devised a new polymeric dispersant that is resistant to leaching to aid formulators. Note de contenu : - Novel test methods hepl to track down the source of the snail trails
- Qualitative test - does the paint formulation develop snail trails?
- Illustrating the pratical use of the test: various binders in a paint formulation
- Quantitative test: finding the root cause of leaching in a paint

Revêtements -- Défauts:Peinture -- DéfautsIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Two major problems that periodically arise during the surface coating of automobiles are oven plume opacity (smoke that violates local opacity ordinances) and oven condensate that can drip on cars and leave an oily residue. Both of these problems are caused by the evaporation of semi-volatile organic compounds in bake ovens. A new test procedure has been developed to standardize the analysis and reporting of condensate/smoke-causing compounds that are emitted from paint, sealer, and coating materials when they are baked. Use of this test will allow identification and quantification of potential sources of condensate, smoke, and opacity in the laboratory. The information is essential to material suppliers and formulators, and to users who prescreen materials in order to avoid costly problems in production. Note de contenu : - Sample preparation

Titre : Micro-mechanic model for cathodic blister growth in painted steel Type de document : texte imprimé Auteurs : T.-J.

Revêtements -- DéfautsIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : A micro-mechanic blister growth model is proposed for a coating system consisting of a polymer film applied to a steel substrate exposed to salt solutions. The mechanism of the blister formation is based on corrosion-induced disbondment of the coating at the defect periphery coupled with the stress driven diffusive transport of liquid along the coating/ substrate interface. By considering the coating as a semi-double cantilever beam loaded by a moment at the periphery and a distributed load along the beam length due to mass transport, a fifth order ordinary differential equation is derived for the beam deflection. The solution is obtained, which yields the functional relationship between the blister growth rate and applied bending moment. The predicted blister growth velocity compared favorably with experimental observations on a paint coated steel panel immersed in a five percent salt water solution. Model predictions allow the construction of a blistering zone/non-blistering zone map, which should help to design better protective coatings for steel.
