Very high viscosities may occur during the invert emulsion process, while the surfactants used may impair the properties of the dried film. A new emulsifier that crosslinks during drying can improve final properties, while allowing emulsification to be completed before the solvent is stripped from the original alkyd. solvantsIndex. décimale : 667.6 Peintures Résumé : Over the years, the use of conventional organic solvent-based paints has come under increasing environmental pressure. More recently, the toxicity of these solvents to humans has also become an area of concern. Prolonged exposure to these solvents, especially by professional painters and those working in the paint manufacturing industry, has been found to cause the organo-psycho syndrome (OPS). In addition, most organic solvents are flammable, and come from oil sources, which may become depleted at some time in the future. These concerns have driven the world coatings industry to develop water-borne technology for application in low VOC paint systems. For many years now, water-borne dispersions have been used for decorative coatings where they are slowly replacing conventional solvent-borne alkyd systems. Whereas in some other application areas, the advantageous fast drying and superior properties of water-borne dispersions has led to rapid replacement of solvent-based coatings, this same fast drying has limited the success in decorative coating applications. The "open time" or "wet edge time" of water-borne coatings is generally regarded as being too short. Revêtements en phase aqueuseIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : The author discusses new formulation for semi-transparent wood stains that aims to give superior exterior durability.
More restrictive regulatory requirements along with applicators' preference for low odour, safe to handle products, are continuing to drive the adoption of waterborne formulations as opposed to solventborne.
The wood coatings sector is no exception, where performance criteria, such as exterior durability, early water resistance and hardness development are key, whatever the formulation base.
Recent developments in acrylic technology have helped to address increasing demand for more environmentally responsible formulations, with waterborne solutions enabling minimal emissions of Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) and supporting APEO-free coatings.
However, with tough exposure demands in an exterior environment, acrylic-based wood stains must be capable of withstanding peeling and flaking, phenomena that result from degradation at the wood coating interface.
New developments at Dow, which is increasingly working with 100% acrylics, are designed to address these challenges and deliver against appearance criteria, water resistance and durability demands.Note de contenu : - Key performance requirements

Revêtements en phase aqueuse:Peinture en phase aqueuseIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Statistical methods were used to develop hydroxy functional acrylic emulsions for use with a water-dispersible polyisocyanate crosslinker. The resulting two-component waterborne coating systems were optimized for kitchen cabinet and office furniture applications. Key performance criteria included appearance and aesthetics pot life, print and mar resistance, and chemical resistance involving both Kitchen Cabinet Manufacturers, Association (KCMA) and office furniture requirements. Statistical analysis revealed several strong correlations between acrylic emulsion hydroxy level, particle size, composition Tg and polymerization process and wood coating performance. For example, smaller acrylic emulsion particle size was found to yield many performance benefits with few detriments. Coating formulation variables were also found to be significant. Ultimate coating hardness increased with water-dispersible polyisocyanate level, yet early hardness readings correlated negatively with water-dispersible polyisocyanate level. Plasticization and crosslinking effects were thought to be responsible. Higher ethylene glycol monbutyl ether (EB) coalescent level was found to correlate negatively with coating hardness, suggesting a reaction between the EB hydroxyl group and the water-dispersible polyisocyanate, resulting in plasticization of the coating.
