To obtain the desired properties, we develop two filled polymer systems, one for conductive layers and one for dielectric layers. We describe numerical models used to help determine the material and processing parameters that impact processing and layer stability. These models help quantify the critical ratios of densities and viscosities of the two layers to maintain stable layers, as well as the effect of increasing the flow rate of one of the two materials. The conducting polymer is based on polystyrene filled with a blend of low-melting-point eutectic metal and nickel particulate filler, as described by Mrozek et al. (2010). The appropriate concentrations of fillers are determined by balancing measured conductivity with processability in a twin screw extruder. Based on results of the numerical models and estimates of the viscosity of emulsions and suspensions, a dielectric layer composed of polystyrene filled with barium titanate is formulated. Despite the fact that the density of the dielectric filler is less than the metallic filler of the conductive phase, as well as rheological measurements that later showed that the dielectric formulation is not an ideal match to the viscosity of the conductive material, the two materials can be successfully coextruded if the flow rates of the two materials are not identical. A measurable capacitance of the layered structure is obtained. Note de contenu : - NUMERICAL MODELING : Linear stability analysis - Three-dimensional free surface flow in the splitter

Revêtements protecteursIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Nanocrystalline Ni–Co alloy coatings containing 0–45 wt% Co were electrodeposited using horizontal electrodes in a modified Watts bath. Different techniques including scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, microindentation, and potentiodynamic polarization were used to characterize the alloy coatings. Properties of the alloy coatings were investigated as a function of the cobalt ion concentration (Co2+) in the bath. It was observed that the alloy codeposition exhibits anomalous behavior. Co content in the alloy coatings increases with increasing Co2+ in the bath and with electrolyte agitation. Morphology and grain size of alloy coatings are greatly affected by Co content. By increasing Co content, surface morphology of the alloy coatings changes from pyramidal to spherical. Microhardness of the alloy coatings increases with increasing Co content mainly due to decreasing grain size that follows the Hall–Petch relation. In addition, Ni–17 wt% Co alloy exhibits better corrosion resistance compared to pure Ni and other Ni–Co alloy coatings. The higher corrosion resistance of Ni–17 wt% Co coating is discussed based on its phase structure, grain size, and preferred orientation. Note de contenu : - EXPERIMENTAL METHODS AND MATERIALS

Revêtement métalliqueIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : A new, durable, etchant- and tin-free catalyzation process was studied for electroless nickel metallization of aramid fiber via iodine pretreatment. Firstly, iodine components were selectively doped onto the inner part of the fiber using vapor iodine exposure followed by treatment with a tin-free acidic palladium chloride solution to form palladium iodide (PdI2) on the fiber surface. After subsequent reduction of PdI2 into metal palladium (Pd), electroless plating was carried out. A uniform Ni plating layer was formed on the fiber surface, which exhibited high durability against resistance tests of ultrasonic exposure, tape peel-off, and corrosion in NaCl solution. Here, Pd particles that formed at the inner part near the fiber surface functioned as an anchor of the plated layer as well as a catalyst of electroless plating. Investigation of the plate bath composition shows that the use of anionic surfactant enhances the adhesion of the plated layer with fiber matrix, while a reducing agent in the plate bath reduces the smoothness of the plated surface. Also, the plate bath pH and the temperature of the plating solution control the layer deposition rate noticeably more than does the plating time. The proposed method retained good tensile strength in the plated fiber. Ni-plated aramid fiber exhibited durable electrical conductivity and magnetic properties. Pigments métalliquesIndex. décimale : 667.2 Colorants et pigments Résumé : It is worth considering nickel and nickel based pigments says the author.
Metallic pigments have, for a number of decades, provided an essential tool in the hand of the formulators and manufacturers of organic based coatings. A number of different metals and alloys have been used for this type of application including aluminium, silver, gold, copper, bronze, stainless steel and nickel. Since many applications of organic-based metallic coatings are ones that depend on their decorative properties, the pigments are most usually employed in the form of flakes of varying sizes and thicknesses.
The inherent visual properties of the various types of metallic pigments generally determine the applications in which they are used. For example, aluminium flakes exhibit an extremely high level of reflectivity and have a very 'white' hue which makes them ideal for many applications where very bright coatings are required. Copper and bronze flakes however, which are available in a very wide range of colour shades, are extensively used in printing inks to simulate a 'gold' or 'gilt' appearence. Other types of flake pigment may be specified on the basis of properties other than just appearance, such as resistance to corrosion or chemical attack. For example, stainless steel flakes, whilst not showing such high level of brightness as aluminium, are frequently used in situations in which their excellent durability in aggressive environments is essential.Note de contenu : - Versatility
