Langues : Anglais (eng) Index. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Extenders today are very seldom used solely as cheapeners. Their morphology, surface treatment, surface characteristics and nano size have strengthened their applications in almost all the coatings: clear to pigmented, primer to finish, water based to solvent based, architectural to industrial etc. Even in high gloss finishes they are occupying a key ingredient position. The extenders cover a broad range of particle shape and size and also surface activity which control the functional, mechanical and aesthetic properties of a coating. This paper highlights the role of these specific properties in the coatings which of course can not be overlooked in their end product. Note de contenu : - Extender technology

This important metal is converted to another important material called iron oxide (yellow, red or black). This conversion, if not carried out, can create environmental hazards. There are various methods of conversion. The commercial locally available pickled liquoir is converted into yellow and red oxide of iron with satisfactory pigmentary properties. A novel pigment with better optical and functional performance is obtained by depositing a thin layer of ferric oxide on barium sulfate particles. This pigment in various coating system improves physicochemical performance. The treated barium sulfate extender pigment acts as an active barrier. The experimental techniques of surface treatment have been discussed along with the instrumental analysis by SEM, EDAX and XRD, etc. The increasing cost of synthetic true pigments has led to this novel research which is believed to have commercial application and will help in reducing the cost of final products significantly. Traîtements de surfaceIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : This article deals with the treatment of barium sulfate extender pigment with iron oxide and its phenomenological adsorption mechanism in the presence of H+ and OH? ions in solution. The pH range taken in the present study is 5–6. By depositing a ferric oxide layer on barium sulfate particles a novel pigment with better optical and functional performance is obtained. This pigment in various coating systems improves physicochemical performance and acts as an active barrier. The treated pigments can be suitably used in different architectural and industrial coatings. The experimental techniques of surface treatment are discussed, along with the instrumental analysis by SEM, EDAX, XRD, etc. Note de contenu : - EXPERIMENTAL : Materials used - Preparation of the surface treated barium sulfate extender pigments - Influence of pH and charge transfer mechanism - Preparation of coatings - Instrumental analysis - Methods for pigment evaluation - Physical tests of painted films
