Résumé : |
Matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization (MALDI) and electrospray ionization (ESI) mass spectrometry have developed into important chemical structure characterization techniques for many polymers of interest to the coatings industry These mass spectrometry techniques have been developed to enable the mass spectrontetric detection of large, nonvolatile materials. By using MALDI and ESI, we can finally obtain mass specific data on a variety of polymer materials. The masses can provide important data on the polymer repeal units, end groups, and average molecular weights. This paper is designed as an introduction to these techniques with an emphasis on the basics of how these technicues work and how the data can be used to abtain chemical structure information. The paper condudes with an example of how MALDI was applied to aid in the characterization of a novel polyol polymer targeted for coatings applications. |
