The effect of fiber cross-sectional shape on the structure and properties of polyester (PET) yarns have been investigated by the selection of partially oriented polyester yarn (PET POY), which was produced under the same spinning conditions through different spinnerets in a melt spinning plant. The only difference between the fibers are the cross-sectional shapes of spinneret. The different cross-sectional shapes were selected for the experimental work viz. circular, hollow, trilobal, octalobal and delta. The specialty spinnerets which produced yarn will be considered for different applications in carpets and home textiles, whereas circular cross-section yarn will be considered for denim fabric manufacturing. The major difference within the cross-sectional shapes are influenced due to their modulus, higher strain, yield stress, and boiling water shrinkage. No effects on the crystallinity and higher stress were deter¬mined. It was found that 350/96 PET POY shows improved results with circular cross-section at all stages. |
