This review mainly deals with the topics of self-cleaning coatings, focuses on the materials/ingredients that have been used in applications and recent technology that aims to improve these materials. Hydrophobic and hydrophilic techniques in coatings are discussed, and the various mechanisms of self-cleaning are described and related to the properties of materials of the coatings. Although several multinational companies have released products incorporating self-cleaning coatings, there remains much potential in this field, different characterization techniques and feasibilities of material testing are also discussed and analyzed. Though several companies have commercialized a few products based on self-cleaning coating technology, much potential still remains in this field. The scope of this article orbits around hydrophobic and hydrophilic coatings, their working mechanism, fabrication techniques that enable the development of such coatings, various functions like Anti-icing, Electro wetting. Surface switch ability and the areas where self-cleaning technology can be implemented. |
