Résumé : |
This was one of the first books that dealt with 'vulgar painting' and appeared in many editions from 1676 until 1788. A revised version was published by William butcher in 1821 with another edition appearing in 1825.
This extract deals with the pigments employed in painting with oil at the beginning of the eighteenth century. It might be compared with the chapter on House-Painting from Peter Nicholson's work. Exactly on hundred years older, The Art of Painting seems to reflect the practices of its time rather more accurately than Nicholson's work. By the time it appeared in later editions, however, it was very much out of date. |
