Résumé : |
Titanium dioxyde has been known for over two hundred years since its discovery (by William Gregor) in the late eighteenth century. Early developments are described, and attention is paid to the changes which the commercial exploitation of the new white pigment. the challenge involved the general improvement of properties such as opacity, dispersion and durability. Currently, titanium dioxide pigments are manufactured by two processes which are described. The fondamental physical properties are compared with other white pigments and the reasons for the dominance of titanium dioxide explained. The market situation in terms of the quantities of pigment used in various market sectors is also discussed. |
