Man's use third most abundantly available oxide of any element - "Iron oxide" - for colouring purposes, predates written records. Mining of haematite for use as a pigment was carried out in Swaziland in South Africa over 40.000 years ago. The world famous caves at Ajanta and Ellora in India and at Les Eyzies in South Central France have thousand years old painting by pre historic man who used naturally occurring iron oxides to make red, yellow and black colours |
