Résumé : |
The construction industry is changing the way it protects exterior masonry, and is moving away from traditional finishes. It also recognizes the need for coatings to protect masonry from the effects of weather as well as the cosmetic and decorative functions. As a result, this has fueled the growth of the exterior coatings market as a whole.
For several years now Acrylic polymer emulsions have been the foundation of modern coatings for masonry exteriors. Their advantages are faster drying, good adhesion on non mineral surfaces, better pigmentation and simple handling. Formulations uing 15 to 22% polymer emulsion led to closed films with excellent weather resistance and very low water pick up. Their improved water resistance compared to other paints that are in use is a great improvement.
But building exteriors are still damaged. This exhibits the limits of the acrylic polymer emulsion systems. Lack of high water vapour permeability becomes a great disadvantage, especially when construction defects are found on the roofs or a missing protection allows migration of water from foundations. Acrylic polymer emulsions will not allow water, in the form of water vapour, to escape by diffusion. As a result blisters form and flaking can occur. Finally there's no more protection for the masonry and decomposition takes place. |
