Two different kinds of substrates (laser textured sheets and sheets with different roughness levels) coated with electrodeposition paint, primer-surfacer and automotive top coat are studied. The measured surface profiles of the painted and unpainted sheets are analyzed by Fourier transform yielding the so-called autopower spectrum (square of amplitudes versus wavelength) of the investigated surface. The obtained spectra are studied with regard to characteristic wavelengths dominating the detected surface profiles. Cross-power spectra are used to describe the influence of substrate texture on top coat structure. The mechanical investigations are compared to the optical measurements. The problem is a boundary value problem given by a set of three coupled ordinary differential equations with three unknown displacement functions, and subject to the Dirichlet end boundary conditions. By choosing the origin of the longitudinal coordinate at the middle of the column, the Fourier cosine series was found to be a suitable shape function for the problem and hence the three displacement modal functions were represented using Fourier cosine series, with unknown modal amplitudes. The Fourier cosine series representation of the unknown displacement modal functions simplified the problem to an algebraic eigenvalue problem given by a set of homogenous algebraic equations whose nontrivial solution yielded the characteristic buckling equation. The stability equation was obtained as a third-degree polynomial for the asymmetric cross-sectioned column. For asymmetric cross-sections, the buckling modes were obtained as coupled flexural-torsional modes. For bisymmetric cross-sections, the buckling modes were uncoupled and failure could be flexural or flexural-torsional. For monosymmetric cross-sections, one of the buckling modes is uncoupled while the others are coupled ; and failure could be by either Euler bending or bending-torsional buckling. The solutions obtained in this work agree with results obtained by previous researchers. Note de contenu : - THEORETICAL FRAMEWORK

Tannage Résumé : A chromium-keratin tanning compound has been prepared by treating chicken feathers with acidified dichromate. The newly developed chromium-keratin compound contain ~ 17% w/w Cr2O3 and protein content of ~10% w/w. The chromium-keratin compound has been characterized using FT-IR, MALDI-TOF, EDX and computer aided color analysis. Tanning studies have been carried out with goat skins, where the chromium-keratin compound has been used as chrome tanning agent in place of basic chromium sulfate (BCS). The denaturation temperature of chromium-keratin tanned leather analyzed by DSC shows a value of 112°C and the percentage exhaustion of chromium in the tanning bath is greater than 80 percent. Structural and physical characteristics of chromium-keratin compound treated leathers were analyzed using standard techniques and the results were compared with the control leathers tanned with commercial BCS. Small recovered paint chips reveal a portion of their past history. Positive identification of generic binder types, solvent entrapment, unreacted monomer, and improper catalyzation are demonstrated. Plastic type and degree of degradation may be identified. An introduction to the versatility of the instrument is presented.
